Gaurav Dasgupta (3/7/2007 10:16:17 PM): the reason why FILMS influence us more than other media - eg serials is because of the hall factor - u watch in a dark hall- engrossed - without chatting with anyone without commercial breaks and hence it is very easy to have ur complete attention and influence ur mind
poori_oops (3/7/2007 10:17:19 PM): people who create disturbances in the public just cause they are not happy with the concept of a movie. Well, thats not the real reason, these people have no jobs whatsoever but to spark riots. And they will do it even in a world - sans cinema.

Mr. GD Taker: Hi this is Gaurav, ur GD taker for the evening.... and i wish good luck to all of u....

I hope u would have read the rules, so please dont indulge in violent debates, have a peaceful session, suport ur answer with sufficient logic and reasoning, use different fonts and colours (font size 10) and not leave the conference without my permission.
Mr. GD Taker: the topic for today's evening is "Artificial Intelligence - Will man be ever replaced by machines?" U have 3 mins to think on it

Rahul Parab: The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first used by John McCarthy who considers it to mean "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines"..............AI is studied in overlapping fields of computer science, psychology, neuroscience and engineering, dealing with intelligent behavior, learning and adaptation and usually developed using customized machines or computers.

Mr. GD Taker: and please don't use google .....

Gaurav Dasgupta: OK - when we mention artifical intelligence - things which come to our mind - is teh AI movie, terminator series, robots and a thought that whether we are doing the rifght thing depending so much on machines??
deepika tiwari: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, can be simply put as "INTELLIGENT AUTOMATED MACHINES" ... a scientific approach 2 make things better, to accomplish tasks, be it in the form of automated production systems of super computers or robots!

sucharitha kashigari: artificial intelligence is some thing again created by men so there is no replacement for mans intelligens

Rahul Parab: as AI comes, manpower gets loosened..............men don't take much effort in their work...

Gaurav Dasgupta: we remember the scenes where the world is being taken over by the machines , robots and they have taken over us.... although it is a disturbing thought - there's no denial that we aren't afraid of such a possibility

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): Artificial Intelligence is about something that we create in to make our work happen more faster and with much better accuracy

Rahul Parab: AI works on man's power..............it can not work on itself................how man tells or instructs them....AI works...

Gaurav Dasgupta: We humans like to keep power in our own hands - we like to govern the earth - we want to take every step so that we are the boss of everything - hence anything which tries to take away the power of supremity from us - we feel insecure....

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): ya.... gaurav.... u right at your point.... it may happen.... and if it does, then it will be a day of beggining of dominance of machines on mankind
Rahul Parab: but no one will overcome menpower..........even not technologies or AI...

Gaurav Dasgupta: We have created AI - but our onlymotive is that it will make our work more easier - that it will understand ourcommand beter - that it will be a better slave to us than other dumb machines which need command at each and every step...

Rahul Parab: i'm also agrre with Gaurav...............

deepika tiwari: AI has been only helpful to mankind in more than one ways. now he Question, "Artificial Intelligence - Will man be ever replaced by machines?" my answer to this is, "can a car run on its own?" .... NO. MAN HAS DISCOVERED AI, but AI DOESNOT KNOW HOW HUMAN LIFE OPERATES!!!

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): Rahul its a known thing that machines can never operate on themselves.. man has to operate it... we are not talking about full dominace....

Gaurav Dasgupta: the situation is not only with AI - it happens with real people also - dont u remember Abhimaan - where when Jaya bhaduri became more famous than amitabh - he couldnt bear it...

Rahul Parab: ok ok........

Gaurav Dasgupta: hence we cannot bear the fact that our creation - our protege can be more efficient than us...

Gaurav Dasgupta: now with our limited knowledge we may think that machines - even AI canot work itself... but after all there are more things in heaven and earth than what we can perveive and understand

Gaurav Dasgupta: it can very well happen that the AI can be so efficient that it will be able to operte on itself...

Gaurav Dasgupta: dont u remember movies like I, Robot -- the logic given there is perfectly possible....

deepika tiwari: but AI has surely affected human life! AI cant replace humans, but it will surely harm them... there shall be competition amongst pepople, its not about AI replacin men, but the fact that d MASTER men behind developin AI reignin over the weaker sections of the society. y will someone pay men if they can obtain machines who are efficient and dont need 2 be paid?

Gaurav Dasgupta: however, i must say that i am being too futuristic.... its practically not possible to replace human brain with machines.. the creation of the divine - the human brain is unmatchable...

Gaurav Dasgupta: even to do something we need resources which the AI can never get... and they being machines - they wont be able to adapt to situations or changes in surroundings like humans

deepika tiwari: guys lets not confuse ourselves here n lets think beyond some movies.... humans have been proved to be having the best brains, and we are not so foolish to create somethin that shall take away our power and get outa control

Gaurav Dasgupta: the most importantthing which the AI lacks is emotion -- and till we can instill that in AI - they can never ever match the humans

deepika tiwari: but y wud humans create emotional machines? men wont do anythin that wud have d potential to harm them... however AI has been beneficial to the richer sections of the society and the inventors, wat about the other men?

Rahul Parab: In a world where even manpower has an alternative, there seems to be no room for human existence; independent of agents in the very apparent outlook

Mr. GD Taker: Guys, whenever u are putting some point u need to enhance it using some examples.

Mr. GD Taker: and i dun see any participation from any of the others

Mr. GD Taker: keeping mum will not help u in a GD

Gaurav Dasgupta: exactly - hence we should not be afraid and stop creating AI - the point is the advantages we get from AI are phenomenal

deepika tiwari: AI has already replaced men in engineering n various other industries... they surely can work more efficiently, plan n ctrl things better. so AI has surely replaced humans. automated machines have simplified tasks to such an extent y wud someone employ men? though not FULLY .. AI has partially taken over human tasks though HUMANS shall always control them. look at the software industry.. a LIVE example!

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): what we should think has to be according to the standard and level of dominace of machines on mankind..

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): one thing is 100% sure machines can never dominate humans completely...

Gaurav Dasgupta: just because some film makers or fiction writeers are making us afraid - this should not deter us from pursuing our scientific goals

Gaurav Dasgupta: i agree with you - the benefits we get from AI are so much - it makes our life so much simpler - just imagine it is so helpful for disabled people like blind

deepika tiwari: ya that TRUE, AI cant CONTROL humans, but it can surely

REPLACE them in certain activities

Gaurav Dasgupta: or old people

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): but ya, the level of dominance what is now can be more on future... Like today in countries like Japan, korea, the office management is generally managed my machines....\

Gaurav Dasgupta: However, we should keep in mind that although AI makes our life easier - there s a rider, we should not be completely dependant on them - we should know how o live without them...

deepika tiwari: AI shall always come AFTER men, coz WE R D ONES TO DEVELOPE IT, AND WHO CONTROL IT, AI may replace men in factories, but we need the same men to comprehend its working and operate its functioning

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): but ya, it can never happen that one day, in office we would only have robots and machines all arounf.. It can never happen.. Humans have there greatest god gift with them and its intellect and none machines can every operate it...

Gaurav Dasgupta: like in INdia - since we do not have that much technology - if we have power cut - we dont fel that much problem - we can live with it - last year New York had power cut for 3 days and it seemed that the world had ended for them - they are so much dependant on technology...

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): i think everybody here must have watched SPIDERMAN 2...

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): there it is shown that how machines can dominate the thoughts of humans......

Gaurav Dasgupta: hence similar applies for AI - we should take full utilization of AI - but at the same time we muct not forget that we should try to retain our basic skil lso that whenever the AI fails, we do not despair .. but can do the work ourselves...

deepika tiwari: the software industry has seen so many developments, super computers, servers and big aumtomated systems, however MEN are the ones who control, operate, understand and direct these systems....

Mr. GD Taker: ok, ur time is up.... kindly wind up....

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): ok..

Mr. GD Taker: To end it, i want each one of u to summarize the discussion

Gaurav Dasgupta: as i mentioned .. till the emotion is put into AI - they can never replace humans - because the thing which makes humans far superior is that only

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): What i believe is machines can never replace men.. But ya, it can diminish his level of importance in all the areas of living in this world...
deepika tiwari: in a leading company's refrigeration department, around 2000 employees were displaced due to the new technology called "takav" system that was introduced... so too much of AI will be harmful but it was MAN's decison to go 4 it, and i think man is capable of developin, controllin and also minimisin the ill effects of AI... after all MAN is the master of AI!

Rahul Parab: In conclusion, I would like to say that - Aritificial Intelligence is the study of methods by which a computer can simulate aspects of human intelligence, is fast emerging as a major research trend among the scientific community but this can not be replaced ever to manpower ass manpower has more stability in hand..........and can do impossible changes around the world which AI can not do itself without functiong of man.................that's it !!!

Gaurav Dasgupta: The point to be noted is not only whether man will be but whether man "should be / ought to be" replaced by machines - I think that machines or AI can never replace man in all fields but if it is found that AI helps us do some work much efficiently then we should take full advantage of it - but at the same time we should keep in mind that we should be self - sufficient and should be in a position to perform everything on our own - if and when the need arises

Feedback:

Mr. GD Taker: Right.... what i felt was , firstly all of u need a good amount of practice.... Indeed u guys tried well, but a GD is not merely opinion.

Mr. GD Taker: Gaurav dasgupta tried well, but u merely gave 'filmy' opinion.... which is not much needed. Indeed films are a portal to reality, yet they are FICTION. U guys are management students and hence, need to think more and give more EXAMPLES

Gaurav Dasgupta: y a- i know

Mr. GD Taker: deepika also tried well, but what she lacked was again examples.....

Mr. GD Taker: and shalin and rahul havent given much input

deepika tiwari: hmm , examples were really missing, i agree... however was a gud time

Mr. GD Taker: and i dun know why sucharitha and love_hunk were quiet all the time

Mr. GD Taker: See u got to remember one thing..... GD is a not a place to idle.... it is a fierce battle

Mr. GD Taker: true, u are not supposed to bash each other's heads, but inside u got to really fight, within the rules

Mr. GD Taker:

Mr. GD Taker: At the end, gaurav and deepika gave some examples.... but u guys never really discussed what was needed

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): will try better next time.... will work out more next time..

Mr. GD Taker: we can't really compare AI with movies

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): but it was really gud...

Mr. GD Taker: maybe I-robot talks of emotions, but are they there?

Mr. GD Taker: See, some points u shud have added...... is

Gaurav Dasgupta: ya - some amount of direction was lacking - i felt...

deepika tiwari: ya trully... hopefully in REAL TIME GD's this wont happen.

Gaurav Dasgupta: ya - here comed the most imp part...

Mr. GD Taker: say from the management side.... Can a robot be an effective manager?

Mr. GD Taker: Managing an orgaanisation involves taking complex tactical decisions... So can a pre programmed machine do that?

Gaurav Dasgupta: ok]

Mr. GD Taker: Does it have the human qualities of tenderness, intimacy, direction, etc?

Mr. GD Taker: A robot will not be supplying water to a dying man, will it?

Rahul Parab: no way...............Robot can't handle stress-related issue or critical situation in pressure

Mr. GD Taker: Yes, it can drive a car on a pre mapped area... but will it be able to teach in classrooms where the citizens of future have to be moulded?

Mr. GD Taker: Talk of the increase in unemployment that would be caused

Gaurav Dasgupta: ahha - thats imp

deepika tiwari: hmm... that was one point no one responded 2

Mr. GD Taker: Hence, considering all these issues, (which could have been very well expanded) i can say never

Shalin Jain (cat_banda): u very true gaurav...

Mr. GD Taker: AI can be used to assist human beings, but God has given a brain which can never be replicated

Gaurav Dasgupta: i mentioned this

deepika tiwari: one Question MR. GD taker, is one supposed to refute or support any of d views given by others jst like in debates? or continue his/her views?

Mr. GD Taker: I would advice all of u to read well

Mr. GD Taker: well deepika, it depends on the situation

Mr. GD Taker: See when a moderator marks u, he says what points u have put up

Mr. GD Taker: how much knowledge u have abt the topic

Gaurav Dasgupta: u gonna mark us?

Mr. GD Taker: Now obviously u will be taking one stance.... either say 'for' or 'against'

deepika tiwari: k...

Mr. GD Taker: So , say if Gaurav has already said a point which u were going to say..... so maybe u can come up with something like....... "yes i definitely agree to u but/and " (add something else so that it doesn't look like repeating)

deepika tiwari: but aint 30 mins less 2 read d other n type ur own views + comment on d other's views?

Mr. GD Taker: @deepika..... u should be prepared with all kinds of situations

Gaurav Dasgupta: ok

Mr. GD Taker: I think this time, for one of the B-schools only 2 mins were given to discuss

Rahul Parab: in real gd, u don't get more time to think n coment @ deepika

Mr. GD Taker: besides, check how much time i have taken to type my feedback?

Mr. GD Taker: and the points i have put up

Mr. GD Taker: So i mean, its not the time that counts, but ur points

Mr. GD Taker: Even if u put up say 5-6 good points, u are in

deepika tiwari: hmm... thanx, 1st experience, will surely try n improve

Mr. GD Taker: Another thing is, while giving examples, u shud quote some figures

Mr. GD Taker: as well

Mr. GD Taker: maybe some statistics etc

Mr. GD Taker: for that u got to keep reading

What is ur opinion on "takin a FIRM Stand in a gd early on"
Ne comments welcome!

Well it depends !

If u have a topic in which u are 100% confident and well versed. Then take a side - either 'for' or ''against' and dont oscillate... but that still doesn't means that if u r proved wrong, u still be adamant.

Being adamant depicts bad quality. There is a difference between being firm and being adamant.

If the topic involves some general discussion, say on India Pakistan, or nuclear war, then for such topics a a firm stance might be difficult, since they involve a thorough discussion of both sides.

Ideally, GD should be done like a DISCUSSION and NOT A DEBATE !!

"takin a FIRM Stand in a gd early on"

BAD IDEA.

The basic motive of the GD is to see how you fare in a group. How receptive you are to others point of view.

"Only fools know everything"

Team dynamics and looking at the topic from different perspectives and fresh ideas will be the key factors that determine your score.
