Managerial Skills and the Organizational Hierarchy: -

Robert L Kartz identified three kinds of skills for administrators. To these fourth may be added as the ability to design solutions.

They are as follows: -

1) Technical skills: -

  • It is the knowledge of a proficiency in activities involving methods, procedures and processes.

  • It involves working with tolls and specific techniques.

  • For example mechanics work with tools, the supervisors have ability to teach the juniors how to use the tools.

  • Similarly accountants apply specific techniques.


2) Human Skills: -


It is the ability to work with people, its co-operative efforts; it is teamwork, creating an environment full of security and able to freely express their opinions.


3) Conceptual skills: -

It is to recognize significant elements in a situation, and to understand the relationships among the elements.

4) Design skills: -

  • It is the ability to solve problems in ways that will benefit the enterprise.

  • Manager must have a foresight, the skill of a good design engineer in working out a practical solution to a problem.

  • They must also have the valuable skill of being able to design a workable solution with rationality.
