IS Facebook popular because of games?

No doubt Facebook has a lot of applications like mafia wars and farmville which make their users glued to the screen. These games are highly addictive and contributes to the popularity of facebook.

But Orkut and facebook has a very separate domain of users. For example, if we visit metros like Delhi and Mumbai, Facebook scores over Orkut. But if you go to the eastern zones like Kolkata, orkut is much more popular.......!!

yeah facebook is popular becuase of its games......they are as intellectually stimulating as my strategy lectures......
 
Orkut would rather be more popular for networking but many people in facebook are just there playing games.
And it has become highly addictive...

I opine that Facebook is on top-notch for many reasons..Although basically facebook does most of what orkut does--connecting with friends, sharing interest (the Wall-concept).But facebook does have more applications.,its no.1 entertainment medium with lot many games to be played & explored;with a more sophisticated user interface & better privacy controls. Its programmed in such a way tat it can be more easily handled. For some people, its games are great 'stress-busters'; for others, its the best 'speaker's corner', where anybody can stand & address the whole world! No medium has ever existed where one could as easily broadcast his/her thoughts to more no. of people just at the click of a mouse! From kids to adults, everyone is getting fascinated towards facebook because of its stress-buster games & its designed in such a way that, its explorative-games, stimulate one's interest in to do more exploration quite often. For games like farmville, one needs to visit often, to sell what they have grown, to accept what their friends have sent... to be upgraded as the player of higher levels.. Doing these things, One would spend atleast two hours without their knowledge in playing games.. Good marketing strategy to hold audience indeed!!

Does facebook really kills office productivity is one imp thing to be thought of! but, Survey finds 77% of facebookers use this on the job. People at workplace, use facebook for not only playing games, but to connect with colleagues, it also helps bridge gap at work.. Employers use this medium to post job offers to jam crowded audience, so that 1 post would surely get him 20-30 responses..Just few years ago, who would have dreamt of connecting their boyfriend/girlfriend, family & friends abroad, on a single platform,i can say facebook has made that dream come true... Atlast, one thing i wana make clear is, it all depends on how one takes it, either to make the best use out of it or ruled-out by it!!
 
well orkut is very good for networking.....specially when it comes to communication with the old freinds....whom you dont meet daily....it will always have a special place but facebook, i agree, that is more attractive due to its applications and games........i think its more usefull for friends cause you are connected to each other ....you see each others score and activities .....u interact by gifting a stray pet or fertilizing each other's farm or feeding your friend's fishes ........its like you dont need to start the stupid conversations again and again when alll is said and done .......like on orkut itss like, in 2 months you scrap each other -......hieee, how are you?.....i m f9. hw r u?.......me good. wts going? ......nothing .just the ususal. wtz new on your side?.....nothing just the same..... and then after a break of 1 month you say - hiee, hw are you ? ................lol:drum:;)

Well, no doubt that a major reason for FB's popularity are its games. Recently Farmville got an award as well and its creator Zynga has earned a lot. But it is not all.
If you compare it with orkut then FB is more dynamic and a very open forum. Privacy is minimal and that is where it differs from orkut. But as with orkut, it would be interesting how FB manages to maintain its popularity and does not lose out in the long run as happened with orkut.
 
For me, Facebook means privacy. I can edit whatever I want to, put up content and still get to choose who sees it and much more. As compared to Orkut, Fb is definitely more interactive. It's much more than just networking. So I suppose it;s become popular amongst youth living in metros specifically, as opposed to Orkut which still has a considerable base in some mini metros and Tier 1 cities.
