Re: Notes for Logistics Management
Logistics, originally, originated in the military's need to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and rations as they moved from their base to a forward position, has now a taken a wider aspect.Logistics, now,is not just the transport of goods(for instance, through courier or transport services) but the management of flow of resources between the point of origin and the point of destination, in order to meet the requirements of customers or corporations. Logistics may involve the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging, and even security. It may vary from consumer items such as food to IT materials.
Logistics management activities typically include inbound and outbound transportation management, fleet management, warehousing, materials handling, order fulfillment, logistics network design, inventory management, supply/demand planning, and management of third party logistics services providers. To varying degrees, the logistics function also includes customer service, sourcing and procurement, production planning and scheduling, packaging and assembly. Logistics management is part of all levels of planning and execution -- strategic, operational and tactical.
