Effective Organizational Leadership is like Water
First, effective leadership is like water. Water is the most pervasive commodity on the earth. It flows everywhere and permeates everything. Like water, leaders should flow throughout the organization to know and understand the heart and abilities of their employees. The effective organizational leader interacts with his or her people to know their aspirations and challenges; strengths and weaknesses; joys and heartaches. In this way they build trust and muster support from their subordinates.
Effective Organizational Leadership is like a Big Tree
Secondly, effective leadership is like a big tree. The large tree stands strong and welcomes all creatures (good and bad) to rest within its shade. No matter how much the inhabitants of the tree mess on its branches or on the ground under the tree, the tree does not cry or complain or worry because it knows that such messes become fertilizer in the ground that makes the tree healthy and strong. Likewise, an effective leader does not lament mistakes of subordinates because they know that negative experiences can be used to make the organization stronger.
Effective Organizational Leadership is like a Mountain
Third, effective organizational leadership is like a mountain. Leadership is like a mountain standing strong and steady no matter how the winds may blow. A mountain is never jealous and does not need to compare itself with the inhabitants of the mountain because no matter how large a tree on the mountain may grow, the tree is still dependent on the mountain for its existence. In the same way, an effective leader does not mind when a subordinate gains fame for his work, because such status adds to the honor of the leader.
Effective Organizational Leadership is like a Cloud
Fourth, effective organizational leadership is like a cloud flying high above the earth. Leadership is like a cloud in that it moves above the organization to see the activities of the subordinates and understand all that is going on in the company. Effective leaders need to know what’s going on inside and outside the organization so it can improve the internal operations and respond promptly and skillfully to external opportunities and threats.
Effective leadership management knows and understands employees; is patient and works within their strengths and weaknesses; stands strong and is not jealous; and keeps a clear view of all things in the organization.
