Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) is an American public corporation with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, (in Silicon Valley), that provides services via the Internet worldwide. The company is perhaps best known for its web portal, search engine (Yahoo! Search), Yahoo! Directory, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, advertising, online mapping (Yahoo! Maps), video sharing (Yahoo! Video), and social media websites and services.
Yahoo! was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994 and was incorporated on March 1, 1995. On January 13, 2009, Yahoo! appointed Carol Bartz, former executive chairperson of Autodesk, as its new chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors
Social media is the top online marketing channel for small businesses after company websites
According to the American Express OPEN and Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) “Small Business Search Marketing Survey”, US small businesses recognize word-of-mouth as the top way their customers find them, followed by the internet and search engines.
The reliance on word-of-mouth—likely along with the low cost in dollars of participating—has led small businesses to make social media their No. 2 online marketing effort, after company websites.
As of March 2011, 44% of respondents to the survey used social media for marketing, vs. 28% who used SEO and 21% who used paid search. Looking ahead, more small businesses planned to add social media marketing this year than either search tactic.
Other research supports the finding that small businesses have made social a top priority. A February 2011 MerchantCircle survey found over 70% of US local small businesses used Facebook for marketing, while only about two-thirds used Google and one-third used Bing.
While 57.2% of small business respondents told Ad-ology that social media was at least somewhat useful at generating leads, the MerchantCircle survey found local small businesses were more likely to say search engine marketing was an effective channel than social networks, at 40.2% vs. 36.7%.
Social may have an easier learning curve and require less direct spending by small businesses that are less experienced with online marketing—and the “must-do” factor helps as well—but time-tested online marketing methods like search should not be ignored. Search, in particular, unquestionably helps businesses get found by consumers right when they’re looking to buy.
The Proposal: Background & Objectives
Based on a paper 88 percent of college students have tasted alcohol. Moreover, up to 70 percent of them engaged into binge drinking. Binge drinking can be more dangerous than the usual intake of alcohol. Binge drinking is the consumption of around five bottles in 2 hours for men and 4 hours for women. Since the intake of alcohol is faster, the body does not have enough time to metabolize everything resulting to drunkenness. In addition, this behaviour actually results to about 1,400 deaths and 500,000 unintentional injuries annually, most of the time they are also due to drunk driving.
However, alcohol consumption is considered an accepted element of social interaction on most cultures and/or countries. In England and Wales, majority of the adults drink on a regular basis, ninety percent of men and 85 percent of women in Britain drink alcohol, however, most of them do not drink excessively. Nevertheless, the problem of binge drinking is still prevalent especially among people age 18 to 24.
There is enough justification to be concerned about the effects of binge on young and the society. This is the case since binge drinking is considered as the most common form of harmful alcohol consumption among the youth. As stated earlier, binge drinking is associated with crime and disorder. It is for these reasons that the dangers of binge drinking are being highlighted.
The growing concern over the effects of binge drinking among the consumers and the society are putting added pressure over businesses that are tied with alcohol consumption. Pubs are one of these businesses. Larghall Leisure Ltd is a small pub chain, which operates 10 theme pubs in Hertfordshire. Due to the growing concerns over binge and under-age drinking, Larghall has introduces strict measures to counter underage drinking. Included in these measures is to give full support to landlords in evicting worse for wear drinkers.
On top of the measure already in place, Larghall is also thinking of changing the nature of their pubs to attract more sophisticated and older drinkers, age 25 to 40. This plan will include changing the theme pubs into wine bars. As such, they will be offering wines and foods or higher prices compared to the brews that they are currently offering.
This move is being considered with the thought of discouraging 18 to 24 years old drinkers to drink at their pubs. Since the nature of Larghall’s 10 outlets are that of theme pubs, it is likely that the themes of the 10 outlets attract an influx of relatively younger customers. Larghall suspects that if they change the theme of their pubs then younger crowds will be discouraged to enter them. However, Larghall is aware that they are profiting from the current set-up of the 10 outlets, even though, they do not target under-age drinkers specifically.
