The following formula for the toothpaste was arrived at after having undergone exercise in balancing the two properties of a dentifrice, viz, cleaning ability through abrasion and ability to cause minimal wear of the teeth enamel. Mixing of the following ingredients would provide a tooth paste that cleans the teeth and minimizes the damage to them through abrasion.
The mixture of distilled ater (35 kg) glycerine (15 kg) and additives is taken in the S.S.Kettle, mixed, heated to boil, heating is then discounted and gum tragacanth (6 kg) added in small proportions keeping the mixing on. The mass is allowed to cool for 24 hours and strained through a muslin cloth. The gum mucilage thus prepare is sufficient for 20 charges of 100 kg paste production and is stored in tightly closed containers.
Peppermint chalk (30 kg) and discalcium phosphate (10 kg) are next mixed in the planetary mixer for about an hour and mixer stored separately.
Again in the planetary mixer, saccharin, water-glycerine and gum mucilage in the required quantities are added together. The mixer is heated to 212 degreeF til the whole mass becomes homogenous. The wetting agent is then added slowly and the mass is cooled to 100 degree F. menthol in peppermint oil is next added and the mass is stirred to cool and allowed to stand for 2 days. It is then homogenized and filled into tubes.
