What is METHOD STUDY ?
M
Definition of Method Study:
“the systematic recording, examination, and analysis of existing and proposed ways of conducting work tasks in order to discover the most efficient and economical methods of performing them.”
According to the British Standards Institute:
Method Study is “The systematic recording and critical examination of ways of doing things in order to make improvements.”

EXAMINE
Critical examination is conducted by subjecting each activity to a systematic and progressive series of questions Process symbols which present the activities of any process can be divided into 2 main categories:
Category 1. Those in which something is actually happening to the work piece. This category can be further divided into 3 parts-
Category 2. Those in which material is either in storage or suffering a delay.

- ethod study is a part of work study and is normally conducted prior to work measurement.
- Method study is the process of subjecting work to systematic, critical scrutiny in order to make it more effective and more efficient.
- It is based on research into motion study conducted by Frank and Lillian Gilbreth during the 1920s and 1930s.
OBJECTIVES
*
- Improvement of processes and procedures***
* - Improvement in the design of plant and equipment*
- * Improvement of layout
- Improvement in the use of men, materials and machines*
- *Economy in human effort and reduction of*unnecessary fatigue**
- **Improvement in safety standards*
- *Development of better working environment.
RECORDING FACTS
- The success of method study is centered around how carefully and accurately the facts of an existing process have been recorded without overlooking minor details.
- Recording of facts in method study is carried out by using charts and diagrams and symbol one using a process sequence and the other using a time scale.
EXAMINE
Critical examination is conducted by subjecting each activity to a systematic and progressive series of questions Process symbols which present the activities of any process can be divided into 2 main categories:
Category 1. Those in which something is actually happening to the work piece. This category can be further divided into 3 parts-
- Make Ready Activity
- Do Activity
- Put Away Activity
Category 2. Those in which material is either in storage or suffering a delay.
DEVELOP
- the new method is developed by:
- Recording the proposed method on a Flow Process Chart.
- Describe all the activities in detail. Prepare symbolic summary of activities (210 old method 160 new method so on and so forth.)
- Calculate savings in time, distance and money.
DEFINE
Development of a new method should be carried out by defining ‘WRITTEN
- STANDARD PRACTICE’ or ‘OPERATOR
- INSTRUCTION SHEET’.
INSTALL
- Success of installation of a new method can be summarized as:
- Gaining acceptance of departmental supervision.
- Gaining approval of change by works and general management.
- Gaining acceptance of change by involved workers and their representative.
- Maintaining close contact with the progress of job.
- The installed method must be maintained in its specified form.
MAINTAIN
- The installed method must be maintained in its specified form.
- The workers must not be permitted to slip back into old methods or introduce external elements.
