wud retail malls devastate small traders business

well i dont think so that the malls are going to hamper the business of small retailers.. the retail industry in India is divided into 2, organized & unorganized, the organized industry consist of only 5 % of indian market & it is very difficult for any sector to reach to vanish the unorganized industry, we on day to day basis also prefer to go to general stores & not mall every day...

We all know that the mall culture is here to stay. It surely has affected the small traders. But I feel that the two of them will co exist?

Yes it does affect small traders/retailers to some extent. But i guess we'll have to remember, the trend of malls is still restricted to the tier I and tier II cities. Majority of Indian population still resides outside these cities and towns. Even with such high growth rates, organized retail is still at about 5% of total retail and is expected to reach to about 11% in the next 3-4 years. Secondly, with increase in disposable incomes, availability of more consumer goods, the pie itself is getting bigger. On the whole, I think India is going to remain a nation of shop-keepers for a long time to come.

agree with this topic that big retailers and devastating the small retailer but in certain extend.
we all know that india has a more than 90% are unorganised sector and rest are organised

and most of the population is lying in below poverty line. who like to purchase from small kiriyana stores only

talking about the rural area . india has around 6.4 villages and more that 700 million population are living in villages, and they all purchase from kirayana stores only.

and organised player dont have a penetrate in villages bcoz of less resources availability , and infrastructure problems

ya,retailers are doing that, just think about our traditional professions who lives in villages and come to cities for lively hood,it is because of retailers they cannot caontinue the work they know and results in unemployment, inturn affecting country

Taking examples of FMCG products :
1) I feel organised retail is unorganised: Ask the counter which soap sells the best and you would find a blank expression , try this with a baniya and check
2) Private Label a huge issue between Organised sector and Companies which makes the baniyas preferred choice as retailers for the companies.
3) The malls are built with a motive to tap the realty boom and not for retailing : a fundamental business problem
4) Not for aam junta : If you talk about then you cant miss the common man , malls if are to compete with small traders need to target the common man which is not the case. They need to indianise it.

5) The consumer xperince in a kirana shop is much more personal: he asks wat u want , ur choices there are suggestions, he pushes the sales , you can get products on credit ;whereas in the malls ha!

Hi buddy

From my point of view, keeping into the indian's trends and living styles retail malls are not going to affect small traders. seeing the facts that still organised retail comprise of just 6% of total retail business activity, it will be too early to comment.

Going by the opinion there is place fopr everyone in market and there is target mkt for everyone, each business type has mkt large enough to survive

while it is true that most people only shop at the retail malls once or twice a month it is also true that they spend 80% of their monthly household budgets here, preferring to make all the large purchases at one time. The remaining 20% of the household budget is what is spent on small traders business for miscellaneous needs.

Whether this is enough business for the small traders to survive is not a general question, and depends on the various factors like location, competition, number of residents in the area etc.

Eventually a balance will be reached between the malls and small traders, but this is a wake up call for traders to provide more value added services like free home deliveries etc, and only the competitive shall survive.

well yes they would, but then again, the target customer for malls n retail shops are different, with a small overlap.....

well thats exactly what i thought of maybe the big fishes might just eat up the small ones n it might go unnoticed but ya no mall will give a monthly credit system which the poor old kirana wala gives.

No doubt..Future is going to be retail...at the same time small traders businessman have to provide value services to the customers to sustain in the market...this is a competitive world..one who provides quality service at reasonable price will survive..time doesn't wait for someone..one has to bring changes to keep up with the time..
