Will 3G services Benefit Rural India?

Hi everyone ,
As we all know 3G auctions in India are scheduled to be held on the 7th December. Would like to know your thoughts and opinions about the success of 3G services in India. Should the 3g services be positioned only for the premium users or should they be xtended to the masses, the rural India. How can they prove to be useful to the rural areas which consitutte about 70% of India's population

3G comes at a cost which all telecom operators will bare. now if the service is to be offered to customers, common sense says that the cost would be divided by the number of target customers + a margin and would be rolled out. Now the cost is definitely going to be far from the reach of the rural segment.

I am also given to understand that Nokia is soon rolling out handsets that target rural India specifically. These handset are going to be bundled with sim's and widgets loaded on sims which would give the farmers an indication of rain, weather forecasts, prices of commodities, etc.

To sum up, I think 3G would hugely impact the urban corporate users to start off with and would take atleast 5-8 yrs before it trickles down to the rural part of India

yes, I do think that the 3 G services can benefit the rural people since they are easy to use and the rual people are would have the same needs that drive 3 G use in urban areas.
Regards
Shankar

I would agree to most of the post here. 3G would take some time to settle in. as far as rural is concerned a long way to go. even in the urban areas the people are not so clear about the technology and service.

It will definately hel rural india ............. but as mentioned earlier will take time to settle in

Well in my view it will take time to make 3G available in rural areas. I think 3G is too much costly at present and it is even used very less in urban areas also. 3G services provided by BSNL are too much costly even costlier than broadband. It will be nice to see how service providers will provide the services at affordable prices in tuff competition in market.
Ya it will benefit rural areas but there is also need of making the people of rural areas about how to use the 3G and its benefits.

well to early to say that 3g deployment will help to the rural areas since it is not been deployed aggressively yet .still BSNL is deployed partially.when spectrum licence will be auctioned ,then competion will really benefit to the end users.
yet BSNL not mention anywhere what is the frequency :bolt::bolt::bolt:band in which they providing 3g services.for 3G deployment essentially required 2400Mhz band for full activity.
as per as rural area is concern at present 80% of rural ppl do know what is internet, how could they understand 3G .
First of all Govt. should focus on awareing ppl about internet, basic requirment of internet & benefit's from internet in rural area's.
Anyway in urban area ,it is new revolutionary step where india stepplng up one GENERATION ahead.

:bolt:

Not at this point of time.. I reckon 3G should be first tried and tested in the Indian urban markets... since it is a new phenomenon and has come here to stay for long, it should be given some time to get absorbed in the markets by all kind of people

3G would ofcourse benefit the rural society. it would empower them through information availability which in turn would uplift their status.
the key issues are to educate and make them more affordable and ease in use. whereas the network providers have to show their ability towards integration with service(e.g. finance,e-commerce etc.) and security of data.
