Why study science at post-graduate level?

It is widely believed that studying science helps you understand how things work and broadens your understanding of the world. Traditionally, there is a lot of prestige attached to science courses and careers in India. Students who opt for science courses are considered bright, knowledgeable and diligent. Yet, paradoxically, the number of students choosing science courses is on the decline in some parts of the country.

Lack of lucrative employment opportunities is cited as one of the main causes of waning students’ interest in science courses. Many of the students who study science at the undergraduate level opt for courses like MBA after graduation. Many students prefer getting high-paying jobs than doing research work in labs. Drab and uninteresting teaching methods can also dissuade students from opting for science courses.

Contrary to what many people believe, studying science at post graduate level can open up a world of opportunities for a student. There are plenty of job opportunities for science students. From research to academics, you can pursue careers in different fields if you study science.

Clearing IIT JAM (The Joint Admission Test for Masters) is the first step for anyone desirous of studying science at postgraduate level in India. It’s a common test for admission to M.Sc., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual degree and other post-B.Sc. programs at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc). M. Sc. is a 2 year degree program that can be pursued in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Statistics and other subjects.

After completing M. Sc. you can take up a job or also choose to pursue higher studies. Those who want to make a career in R&D, pursue Ph. D. IT/ Telecom and Sales are two of the main functional areas where M. Sc. graduates are in demand. While you can always opt for a job after M.Sc., most academicians are of the view that pursuing higher education can make the career growth easier for you. A Ph. D degree can make it easier for a student to get a high paying job and makes future growth easier. Also, a Ph. D degree increases the chances of being promoted to higher management roles.

Clearing IIT JAM test will help a student realize his dream of studying in one of the most prestigious educational institutions in India!

Science has always been a prestigious academic stream in India, associated with intelligence and diligence. However, in recent years, a decline in student interest has been observed. Key reasons include the perceived lack of lucrative job opportunities, unengaging teaching methods, and a shift in focus toward higher-paying corporate careers like management. Despite these concerns, science still holds immense potential. Postgraduate degrees such as M.Sc., followed by a Ph.D., open up diverse career paths in research, academia, IT, sales, and more. The IIT JAM exam is a crucial gateway for students aiming to pursue M.Sc. and research programs at top institutes like the IITs and IISc Bangalore. These programs not only offer academic excellence but also significantly improve job prospects and career growth. With the right awareness and preparation, science remains a rewarding and impactful field that can shape both individual careers and the future of innovation in India.
