Two men have been convicted for having "truly disgusting" pornographic images on their mobile phones, sent to them through the WhatsApp messaging service, though one claimed he didn’t watch what he was sent.

Gary Ticehurst and Mark Kelly received pornographic images and footage that were sent to them for "shock value," the Old Bailey heard, and both pleaded guilty to possessing what the judge called "truly disgusting images".

The men claimed they had been sent the pornography from an unknown source, the Mirror reported, and that they had been unable to watch it as it “sickened” them.

Take any social networking medium there will be both pros and cons.So safety of any medium depend on individual level of addiction or frequency of use.Harm of any mediums depends on pesonal level of usage.
 
The safety of any application depends on the intensity of usage.One cant decide or rate a particular application as safe OR NOT.
 
I agreed with Tanvi that it is your mind how to use the any social media sites or apps. They may be safe when using safely and keep privacy of your personal details else may effect badly. So use any social media apps by having precautions. There are lots of frauds and scammer be found there.
 
I would say that WhatsApp is generally safe, as long as users do not put out to much information. We must also be aware of laws regarding what content we can share. In that regard, the entire Internet is potentially unsafe if we end up with illegal material on our hard drives or phones without intent of seeing it.
 
yes and No for different target consumers available in market.
A business man can provide his samples and get the raw approval on the spot
where else if a college going couple uses it to show that to what extent they trust their partner then its not safe for them .
so goes for every situation for every individual be it any religion or country its the perception which is making the application not safe.

until the company is not spying into our personal contacts ;)
