what is difference between sales and marketing

MARKETING:Its all about adding and retaining the new and existing customer.its also resource consuming activity(through new marketing initiatives).and more importanly its all about identifying and meeting the latent demand of market.

selling:-its the only source that brings revenue for any organisation.its subset of marketing.important........its all about meeting up those demand that is already prevaling in the market.

what has been mentioned above is quite correct..marketing means..think of the product to serve the market..strategize the whole thing..decide the marketing mix..work on the distribution channel etc..marketing in fact is right from conceptualisation of the product, the market and all other aspects of marketing to its final sale
sales is limited to just the converting the finished product into revenue and in some cases with providing service to the users..

However a very important differentiator between marketing and sales is that the goals of the marketing and the sales team are usually different (though in reality they should be aligned).. Marketing focusses on efficiency (getting maximum revenue at minimum cost).. sales focusses on effectiveness (maximum output)

Good fullform derived :) Well sales and Marketing in mid-sized companies has no clear demarcation. everybody wears multiple hats.

Marketing has to be understood as a business discipline separate and distinct from sales. Subordinate to sales, most of the time.

Marketing creates opportunities, and sales brings about outcomes.

Many people mistakenly think that selling and marketing are the same - they aren't. You might already know that the marketing process is broad and includes all of the following:
1. Discovering what product, service or idea customers want.
2. Producing a product with the appropriate features and quality.
3. Pricing the product correctly.
4. Promoting the product; spreading the word about why customers should buy it.
5. Selling and delivering the product into the hands of the customer.
Selling is one activity of the entire marketing process.
Selling is the act of persuading or influencing a customer to buy (actually exchange something of value for) a product or service.
