1 UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD MBA 2014/15
As an integral part of one of the world’s great universities, and with a widely
international student body, the Saïd Business School paints on a broader canvas than
any other business school.
Like every other MBA programme, the Oxford MBA will equip you with the technical
knowledge to approach any business situation with con?dence. It will enhance your
career prospects, and introduce you to a great bunch of fellow students.
But it will also do so much more.
You’ll look at business, not in isolation, but in the context of history, politics, and the
complex global problems facing the world today, from climate change to the ageing
population.
You’ll be constantly challenged to think differently – not to give the easy answers but
to consider a range of possibilities or approach a problem from a new direction.
You’ll join a global intellectual community, comprising academics in every discipline
and Oxford alumni from around the globe.
From attending debates at the world-famous Oxford Union, to trying your hand at
rowing on the Thames or discussing philosophy over a College dinner, you’ll enjoy
experiences you could get nowhere else. And they will prepare you to make an impact
in whatever ?eld you choose.

You will start by gaining a complete theoretical grasp of every
aspect of modern enterprise. This is taught through eight core
courses that take place during the first two terms. Based on
the principal business functions, these courses will develop your
understanding of subjects such as the economic theory of the
firm, the valuation of businesses, and the key issues in strategic
decision-making.
With this foundation in place, you will have the knowledge to
be able to approach any business situation with confidence and
understanding.
After that, it’s up to you to tailor your programme according to
your own interests or career aspirations. There are between 30
and 40 elective courses available each year, covering a wide
variety of subjects. These are often taught by academics and
practitioners in partnership, so that you can see how cutting-edge
research is applied effectively in the workplace. Seven electives
are taken during the second and third terms, with an option to
take a further two during the summer.
In addition, being an integral part of the University means we
draw upon close connections with other departments. This
means developing a wider appreciation of the role of business
within society. Participation in projects such as GOTO (Global
Opportunities and Threats: Oxford) will allow you to investigate
how the application of business knowledge can contribute to
solving global “wicked” problems such as the ageing population
and climate change.

What will I learn?

7 UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD MBA 2014/15
Education at the University of Oxford is all about questioning,
debate, and thinking logically and independently. At the Saïd
Business School, in particular, it is also about applied learning:
putting theory into practice, and reflecting on intellectual
concepts through the prism of your own experience.
The core courses are taught through a mix of case studies and
lectures. The lectures are highly interactive, so you will need to do
a lot of preparation and reading before attending them. You will
also be recommended further reading to consolidate what you
have learned and to broaden your understanding of the subject.
The programme will require you to participate in collaborative
learning in study groups. Seminars and workshops are often
structured around presentations by individual students or teams.
For example, you might be asked to prepare a talk about your
analysis of a set case study, and other members of the group will
then question you and challenge your conclusions. This sort of
exercise gives you practice in defending your point of view, as well
as developing a deeper understanding of the subject by gaining
different perspectives on it.
Each course has a set reading list, which is accessible online. In
addition, you will be expected to make use of the wide range of
business research tools made available through the School’s online
library resources. These include company reports, financial market
data, and academic and practitioner articles.
Strategic consulting project
A popular option during the summer is to participate in a strategic
consulting project (SCP), which will put to the test all the new
knowledge and skills that you have gained.
Working as part of a team, you undertake an eight-week consulting
project – real, not simulated - for a corporate sponsor. Projects take
place all over the world and for all kinds of companies. You might
?nd your team assessing the business case for a new product or
sizing up potential strategic acquisitions for a corporate sponsor.
Or you might be on a mission to develop social entrepreneurship
in the Australian outback, or formulate a strategy for penetrating
the Chinese market. Teams have worked with a wide range of
companies, charities, non-pro?ts, and start-ups.
Entrepreneurship project
During this project you will develop a business plan that is attractive
to a professional investor, and that attractiveness will be assessed
when you and your team present the plan to a panel of invited
venture capitalists and other practitioners. They will be checking that
the numbers add up, the patents are in place, the competition has
been understood, and a winning strategy developed.
If you already run a business this is a great chance to test new
products or business models in a safe environment. Some students
use the entrepreneurship project to develop a plan for a new
business, and then take their plan forward through the strategic
consulting project at the culmination of the programme.
GOTO
Launched in 2013, GOTO (Global Opportunities, Threats: Oxford)
is a new module on the MBA programme. MBA students join a
community, also involving Oxford academics from a range of
departments, EMBA students and alumni, that is focused on
developing solutions to major global problems. GOTO’s central
feature is a dynamic multimedia platform hosting videos from
experts and practitioners, infographics, images, and curated
content, together with debating forums. These are intended to
stimulate thinking and bring together ideas from a wide range of
people with a variety of viewpoints. Working in groups and with
tutor support you will be expected to generate and critique ideas
and action plans for these big problems facing the world.
How will the programme be taught?
WWW.SBS.OXFORD.EDU/MBA 8
“GOTO encourages us as students to critically
evaluate how the world is changing, and to
think about how businesses might respond. It
is a chance to think outside the usual boxes of
?nance, or strategy, or accounting, and think more
deeply about global change, and the business
opportunities inherent in that uncertainty. In its ?rst
year, GOTO has already had a real impact. Several
students have used the platform to connect with
others in the Oxford network uniquely situated to
help them progress their ideas. It's a gateway to
experts, mentors, and potential partners.”
Jennifer Walker, MBA 2012/13

Saïd Business School faculty members come from all over the
world and are engaged in rigorous academic research on a
wide range of business-related subjects. They bring to their
teaching not only high-level specialist knowledge but also a wide
understanding of diverse cultures and business environments.
We lead the field in understanding the management of large-
scale infrastructure programmes, acting as a key advisor to
governments and consortia. The School also has outstanding
research strengths in finance, strategy, leadership, corporate
reputation and social entrepreneurship.
Many faculty members have been, or are still, practitioners
themselves, and are very happy to share their experiences as well
as theoretical knowledge.
But learning at Oxford is about more than formal teaching. The
School is at the centre of a community of thoughtful business
practitioners – friends and alumni – who actively enjoy talking to
MBA students. You will have the chance to meet, question, and
learn from successful people in all fields through speaker events,
dinners and conferences.
Silicon Valley Comes to Oxford, for example, is an annual
event in which students mix with technology entrepreneurs,
venture capitalists, advisers and commentators for two days
of workshops, question-and-answer sessions, mentoring and
speed-networking. If you’re a budding social entrepreneur you can
participate in the Skoll World Forum – three days of challenging
debates and panel sessions, networking opportunities, awards and
storytelling.
Who will I learn from?
“A professor who shows a true passion for
teaching! It is this that lures students in, gives
them con?dence and allows accounting to mean
something beyond the T-table. By beginning
each class with a fresh article from that day's
Financial Times, the concepts of assets, liabilities,
pro?tability, performance, measurements and value
all become embedded in a practical toolkit that will
be carried beyond the walls of the business school.
I now love accounting and hear Richard Barker's
voice in my head each time I face a dif?cult problem
"Stop. What do you know? Write it down. Now,
what else do you know?”

"Blackwell's bookshop on Broad Street was always a magnet for me. It was
right around the corner from my college (Harris Manchester) and provided
a ready respite at (most) hours of the day or night. Whether there for
studying, reading for pleasure, or chatting with friends, I spent many hours a
week having tea in their cafe and browsing their bookshelves.
On the work front, as a Skoll Scholar for Social Entrepreneurship, I inevitably
found the Skoll World Forum to be one of the clear highlights of the year.
It was an amazing place to learn, share, and connect with change-makers
passionate about how business can reshape our efforts to make the world a
better place. It's something I return to year after year. "

The learning on the Oxford MBA is highly intensive. In one year
you will cover everything that a traditional two-year MBA covers
– and more.
The programme is built around three ten-week terms, known
in Oxford as Michaelmas Term (October to December), Hilary
(January to March), and Trinity (April to June). During the summer
there is a choice of options: an eight-week strategic consulting
project, an individual academic thesis, two summer electives, or
two compulsory September courses for those students taking
approved internships. The course ends with a final session of
lectures, workshops, and celebrations in the first two weeks of
September.
The course is taught full-time during the first eight weeks of
term. There is a week of unsupervised revision time, followed by
a week of end-of-term examinations. Lectures and seminars tend
to take place during traditional work hours, while you will continue
with group work and individual study during the evenings and at
weekends.
Time management skills and solid preparation are absolutely vital
in all parts of your MBA experience, allowing you to balance your
academic and social lives, work effectively in a project team, and
search for a job at the end of it all.

What will the other
students be like?
The Oxford MBA is one of the most international in the world, with 93% of
students coming from outside the UK. Most are in their late twenties with
around six years’ work experience.
The average GMAT score is 690, and women make up just over a quarter of
MBA students.
Apart from those averages, the only generalisation that you can make about the
other students is that they are all ambitious, hardworking, and have exceptional
track records of achievement in their chosen ?elds. There are students who have
come from ?nance, the public sector, education, the media, manufacturing, and
any number of other entrepreneurs.
Although for all practical purposes you need never leave the School, don’t
forget that through your college you will have the chance to meet a wide range
of people studying everything from Anglo Saxon to Zoology. The opportunity
to meet such a wide range of brilliant people with different experiences and
outlooks is one of the greatest bene?ts of studying at Oxford.

"I always enjoyed strolling through Christ Church Meadow: entering alongside
Merton College on Rose Lane, following the meandering River Cherwell,
crossing over the footbridge, and ending at the Exeter College boathouse.
The whole experience felt so rejuvenating – a respite from my hectic school
and social calendar – and it served as a constant reminder of why I was so
fortunate to have chosen Oxford.
Something as trivial as climbing to the top of St. Mary’s tower, looking
down at Radcliffe Square, and then casting my glance across the skyline of
“dreaming spires” has become permanently etched in my mind. Similarly, for
breakfast on the day of end-of-term exams, I started a ritual where, dressed
in my subfusc and sporting a carnation, I walked down to the Covered
Market and enjoyed a delicious full-English breakfast at Brown’s for a mere
?ve quid. But perhaps the most meaningful experience I had while at Oxford
was being invited to special Boardroom dinners with the Dean and such
notable guests as hedge-fund titan, George Robinson, and former CEO of the
Financial Services Authority, Hector Sants. At those dinners, where Chatham
House Rules were in strict observance, I learned many things; but most
importantly, I gained the con?dence that I belonged, and that there would
always be a seat at the table for me."

The Saïd Business School Careers Centre will work with you to
find and prepare for a role that suits your skills and personality. It
has good relationships with many top employers, such as Amazon,
FSA, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and McKinsey, who actively recruit
MBAs. Despite the competitive jobs market, many determined
and focused alumni have successfully switched careers following
an MBA, most frequently into consulting or financial services.
Many students have used the strategic consulting project as a
chance to demonstrate their abilities to a potential new employer.
The Careers Centre provides CV advice and interview training,
as well as running specialised “boot camps” for people interested
in entering either management consultancy, financial services or
the diversified industry sector. Senior executives from a range
of sectors are on hand to offer one-to-one advice and conduct
mock interviews.
After you have completed your degree, you will automatically
become a member of Oxford Business Alumni, a network of more
than 10,000 people living in 129 countries. National and regional
chapters as well as specialised interest groups organise events
and create opportunities for worldwide relationship building and
information sharing. The relationships that you build as a student
at Oxford and as a member of these alumni groups can have an
enormous impact on your future career.
Careers activities
• Employer presentations
• Panel discussions with a number of different employers
• Skills sessions on a Friday afternoon, covering subjects such
as social media, networking skills, covering letters, and
negotiation
Student treks
The aim of a student trek is to gain some understanding of what
it is like to do business in a particular part of the world. Students
visit a variety of companies and organisations for formal
presentations and meetings, interspersed with social events. You
will meet potential recruiters and alumni of the School, which
will help you build up your international network.
Participating in a student trek can be a great way of enhancing
your career search, even if you do not plan to work in another
country. There are very few jobs that do not require some cross-
cultural understanding or knowledge of international markets.
They are student-led and organised but with input from
the Careers Centre, which can help provide introductions to
potential recruiters and other careers contacts.
Past student treks have included visits to:
• Silicon Valley
• Middle East
• Asia Paci?c (Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong)
• New York
• Africa
• US East Coast (healthcare organisations)

Where will I live?
As a student at the University of Oxford, you will be a member of one of its 38
colleges. You will apply to your preferred colleges after you have been accepted on to
the MBA programme.
An Oxford college is both an academic and a social community, and offers an essential
element of the Oxford experience. While the Saïd Business School will be the
focus of your academic life, your college is your home in the University. It provides
accommodation, meals, common rooms, sports and social facilities, academic
support, intellectual stimulation and pastoral care.
Most MBA students stay in college accommodation, which is located in or around the
city centre. Some, however, opt to rent privately, particularly if they have brought
their families with them. Both your college and the University’s accommodation of?ce
can help you ?nd somewhere suitable to live.
Even if you are living out of college, you can still take your meals there, or at the
School. Light meals and snacks are available in the common room and bar, while the
dining room offers a variety of hot and cold meals for lunch and dinner.

"Every Friday night we’d hold a Texas holdem party at my classmate's home
in Jericho. We worked so hard during the week but on that one night we’d
forget about all the course work and projects that we had to do.
I miss that so much, particularly as I am now an entrepreneur, launching my
new product, the Muku Shuttr, and working even harder! Entrepreneurship
was a key emphasis in the Oxford MBA curriculum. I still remember Stephan
Chambers drilling into us his golden rule of entrepreneurship: "CFIMITYM"
(Cash Flow is more important than your mother).
Meanwhile, I think everyone remembers me as “the Kung Fu guy” after I
performed Chinese Kung Fu at the China Culture Night early in the School
year. This turned out to be a great move. With such a tight coursework
schedule, it would have been impossible to have a very close friendship
with all 200+ MBA students. But in the early days of my business, a lot of
classmates with whom I hadn’t had much interaction suddenly offered their
help, giving me free legal, patent, trademark, and marketing advice. Other
classmates, who came from all over the world, introduced me to many
potential partners and customers in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and
Australia. I’m sure it’s just because they knew me as the Kung Fu guy."

Will my partner enjoy it?
If you bring your partner with you to Oxford, he or she will not be alone. Usually
around a third of each year’s MBA students are married, and many of them bring their
families with them.
The School welcomes students’ partners and families as part of the MBA student
community. The admissions of?ce as well as your college can advise you on matters
such as housing, registering with a doctor, and ?nding a day nursery or school. Most
colleges have graduate student accommodation that is suitable for couples, though if
you have children you might want to opt for a larger, private rented house.
The School organises a number of social events for students’ families, including a
family welcome reception at the beginning of the academic year, a tea party with
entertainment for children and a children’s Christmas party in December. In addition,
the Oxford University’s Newcomers Club provides support to partners of students
and faculty who are new to Oxford, arranging a programme of events and running a
number of clubs and societies.

"The Green Templeton College boathouse became my second home in
Oxford while I was studying for my MBA. I took up rowing to go out of my
comfort zone, and it was also a good way to meet Oxford students outside
the MBA programme. Since I had no ambitions to become a professional
rower, I signed up to be part of the “less committed” team. What I didn´t
know was that rowing is taken very seriously in Oxford, and my idea of
“less committed” absolutely underestimated what was expected of me! I
had training several days a week, usually starting at 6:45 or 7:00 am until
8:00 or 8:15 am, after which I had to rush back home to get ready for a full
day of class.
I loved rowing and my rowing coaches and captains for their sense of
commitment and in?nite patience. I learnt a lot about leadership, team spirit
and encouragement from my teammates. And I loved being able to push
myself to the limit, after rowing in the rain, in the snow, in the dark, with
blistered hands, and (sometimes) after only two hours of sleep."

What will I do when
I’m not working?
As a large university with substantial graduate and undergraduate populations,
Oxford is not short of opportunities for socialising, relaxing, or being as active as
you want to be.
The School itself organises a number of social events for students, such as end-of-
term receptions, summer barbecues, and Friday evening cocktail hours.
Most colleges have their own sports clubs and societies for every conceivable
activity, from drama and music to literary discussion to bell-ringing. If you dine
regularly in college and involve yourself in the community, you will get the chance
to meet other students with unusual backgrounds or extraordinary interests who
will widen your experience in many unexpected ways.
A number of MBA students have played sport at a University level. Most notably,
some have competed in the famous University Boat Race against Cambridge
University.
Even if sport is not your thing, you should take the opportunity at least once to
mess about on the river in a punt, as long as you are prepared to fall in. There are
also balls, formal dinners, and any number of informal parties, gigs and club events.

You will need a good undergraduate degree or equivalent. You will
also have to take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission
Test).
The class average GMAT score is usually around 690. The
programme requires a high level of quantitative and analytical skill,
therefore the GMAT result is an important indicator of applicants’
suitability.
Apart from this measure of academic ability, the School is looking
for people who will be able to make a real contribution to the
programme, either because of their past work experience or their
innate leadership ability. Because so much of the programme is
taught through group work, you will have to demonstrate your
willingness and ability to work in teams, particularly those with a
diverse composition.
The programme is taught in English. If English is not your first
language, you will have to take either the TOEFL or IELTS tests.
