BACKGROUND
Turnaround for Children is a game-changing nonprofit organization that aims to significantly improve public
education for children growing up in poverty so they can succeed in college, career and beyond. In each
partner school, Turnaround works simultaneously in three areas: to create systems of mental health support
for the highest need students; to train every teacher in classroom management and instructional strategies
that drive down disruption and increase engagement; and to help school principals build a high-performing
culture. This fortified learning environment can change the course of children’s cognitive, social, and

With an FY2014 budget of $12.5M, Turnaround is currently working in 10 schools in New York City, 3 in
Newark, New Jersey and 5 in Washington, DC. Its work is supported by the latest research in brain science
