1. THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF INDIA (EDII)

The EDII was set up in March 1983 at Ahmedabad jointly by financial institutions and the Gujarat Government.

The Central Government also established in the same year the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and small Business Development with the objective of coordinating the activities related to entrepreneurship and small business development)

The government established Rural Entrepreneurship Development Institute at Ranchi in 1983, Rural Management and Management Centre at Maharashtra and Training cum Development Centres with the aim to increase interaction between entrepreneurs and enterprise.

State Bank of India, public sector banks, Industrial Development Bank of India, State Financial Corporations, Small Industries Extension Training Institute, District Industries Centres are the other organisations actively engaged in conducting EDPs.

A few state governments have set up Centre for Entrepreneur Development in their respective states.

Apart from this, a host of universities and management institutes have included entrepreneurship in their curriculum.

In consonance with this belief, EDI aims at :

  1. creating a multiplier effect on opportunities for self-employment,
  2. augmenting the supply of competent entrepreneurs through training,
  3. augmenting the supply of entrepreneur trainer-motivators,
  4. participating in institution building efforts,
  5. inculcating the spirit of 'Entrepreneurship' in youth,
  6. promoting micro enterprises at rural level,
  7. developing and disseminating new knowledge and insights in entrepreneurial theory and practice through research,
  8. facilitating corporate excellence through creating intrapreneurs (entrepreneurial managers),
  9. improving managerial capabilities of small scale industries,
  10. sensitising the support system to facilitate potential and existing entrepreneurs establish and manage their enterprises,
  11. collaborating with similar organisations in India and other developing countries to accomplish the above objectives.
