Company Profile:-
Shumaker, Manufacturer and Exporter of footwear and leather goods were established in 1975 by Mr. Agboatwala and a couple of managers in partnership. At first, they under took job work (i.e. manufacturing the upper and insole portion of the shoe).
During the year 1976, Mr. Agboatwala under took the business of horn rely (i.e. checking the horns of the cars), manufacturing of leather belts and handbags. Then in the year 1978, Mr. Agboatwala again switched to footwear and the company was renamed as “SHUMAKER”.
Shumaker is a Mom – N – Pop Shop and has undergone forward integration. In 1975 they had one manufacturing unit, at present they have four manufacturing units.
The Proprietor:-
Shumaker is owned by Mr. Nabeel Agboatwala in partnership with his mother. Mr. Nabeel has done his schooling from St. Mary’s High School (I.C.S.E. School) and B.Com from H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. Mr. Nabeel came into this business in 1991 as Mr. Agboatwala passed away in 1988 when Mr. Nabeel was just 16 years old.
During the span of three years the company was handled by Mrs. Agboatwala, who is a doctor by profession and the manager of the company. With the entry of Mr. Nabeel, the company ran into an all together a new phase.
At the beginning, Mr. Nabeel ended up doing job work for 5 years for a merchant exporter. But in 1997, Mr. Nabeel under took manufacturing of the whole shoe. Hurrache Shoe was the 1st shoe manufactured by Mr. Nabeel. Hurrache Shoe is a woven shoe with a lot of handwork on it.
Leadership Style:-
Mr. Nabeel, being self – taught, practices Participative Style of leadership. He involves his employees in giving suggestions regarding the various events taking place within the factory except for the pricing of the product and about the method i.e. how & where to sell the product.
He conducts meetings wherein he explains about the production plan to the workers and has an interactive session with his employees.
Administration Structure:-
There are various departments within the company:-
• Sampling Department - this department is handled by the designers.
• Administration Department – this department is handled by two
personnel who take care of the paper work of the company.
• Freelancers – these people do all the odd jobs for Mr. Nabeel like getting the Sales Tax No. etc.
• Finance Department – Accounts are maintained in the factory by two personnel’s. Twice a month, an Auditor comes to do the checking and feeding of accounts.
• Two Chartered Accountants -consulting
• One Lawyer-consulting
• Consultant - he is the person, appointed by the owner of the company to do the filling for fringe benefit, to handle the Factory Inspectors, ESI and Provident Fund.
• 70 Employees – Most of them are on contract Basis.
