General Information:-
From among the industries under the purview of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, the engineering and Non-conventional Energy has been categorized as group - V under Village Industries. Under group - V, 23 various industries have been identified by KVIC to assist various level of artisans and beneficiaries to cater various items to the needy areas.
Considering the growth, consistency and contribution made by this group among other industries in KVIC and for proper implementation of the policies of KVIC, a need arose to divide this group to serve the people in better way. Accordingly the Manufacture and production of AM / FM Radios, Two-in-One Cassette player, Voltage Stabilizer, Converter etc have treated as separate industry and Directorate named "Directorate of Electronics".
As per the policy adopted by the commission the both Directorate, "Directorate of REI" and "Directorate of Electronics" comes under one umbrella and named as "Directorate of REI".
Subsequently in the same group another separate Directorate is working with the same motto which is looking after Bio-Technology related work previously it was known as "Directorate of Non Conventional Energy" now it is renamed as "Directorate of Bio-Technology".
The REI have been consolidated and categorized as Carpentry, Black smithy, Aluminum and non-ferrous Industry like Brass, Copper Bell Metal, and Aluminum along with Electronic Industry under the banner of 'Directorate Of Rural Engineering Industry' in the year 1991-92. Besides above there, some schemes like Pin-making and Umbrella assembling etc. were also brought under the ambit of this Directorate.
