Amerigroup (NYSE: AGP) is a health insurance company headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is the largest publicly-traded company focused exclusively on meeting the needs of those enrolled in publicly-funded healthcare programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. In 1994, Amerigroup was founded to respond to the growing need for private-sector partners in states managing healthcare programs for lower-income families and people with disabilities.

How we make a difference.

It’s one thing to offer health programs to families and kids. It’s another thing to actively improve people’s lives.

We don’t just wait for our members to ask for prenatal care. We seek them out. Amerigroup maintains member profiles that include about a dozen indicators that suggest a member might be pregnant. If any of these indicators show up, we contact that member to make sure she gets the appropriate care.

This type of outreach makes a difference. Premature deliveries among Amerigroup members have dropped to 9.4 percent, which is well below the national average of 12.7 percent.

This is just one example of how Amerigroup caregivers go above and beyond to find real solutions for our members.

We reach out to families with personal guidance and educational programs like Taking Care of Baby and Me, a prenatal program for pregnant mothers. We provide enhanced services in several markets, including vouchers for over-the-counter medications and free memberships to the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

We’re committed to helping children live healthy lives. Some of our initiatives and programs include:

PowerZone – a program that addresses childhood obesity

Value-added benefits such as Boys and Girls Club membership and school physicals

Our Bee Wise Immunize vaccine initiative (designated as a “Best Practice” by State of Florida Health Department).

Amerigroup currently serves about 1.9 million individuals enrolled in Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP and other publicly funded programs designed to help families nationwide.

For Families and Children
MEDICAID: State health program for families with low incomes and resources.

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families): For children under 19 and for women who are pregnant or have children.

CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program): For children under 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid and do not have health insurance.

"Living like everyone else."

There's a phrase we often hear when talking to seniors and people with disabilities: "I just want to live like everyone else."

We can't reverse the aging process, nor can we perform medical miracles. But we can make sure that everyone, regardless of their age or the condition of their health, is able to live life as fully as possible.

For some that may mean a new wheelchair. For other's it's having an accessible apartment. Independence comes in many shapes and forms and helping people achieve and enjoy that independence is what we do every day.

National Advisory Board

In 2007, Amerigroup developed a first for the health care industry: a National Advisory Board focused solely on meeting the needs of seniors and people with disabilities. The Board is chaired by Lex Frieden who played an instrumental role in the creation of the Disabilities Act of 1990.

Our National Advisory Board helps us find new and innovative ways to care for the frail elderly and people with disabilities. And it's helped us develop a wide range of products to improve the quality of both physical and behavioral health care. These products are community based and seek to address the unique social and economic issues facing our members.

Aged, Blind, and Disabled (ABD)

Today, with over 180,000 members, Amerigroup is one of the leading managed care organizations in the nation for ABD beneficiaries. We currently serve Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Texas. We have created a unique and comprehensive approach that addresses not just the medical, but the behavioral and social needs of every member we serve.

Senior & Special Services Organization (SSO)

In 2006, Amerigroup established our Senior & Special Services Organization, a unit dedicated to marshalling the resources of Amerigroup to create better products for seniors and people with disabilities. These products can include Medicare Advantage products; managed long-term care programs; traditional Supplemental Security Income products and specialty products and programs for people such as those with developmental disabilities.

Our commitment

We're constantly seeking to improve the quality of health care for our members--new programs, new products, fresh new ideas. But at the end of the day, the thing that makes our approach successful is the dedicated work of our care givers who meet our members where they live, take the time to understand their special needs and commit to helping them build healthier and better lives.
