Recently, I was on two MBA Open days, one with Warwick and one with Ashridge. I got puzzled by information I got from careers service: because of economical crisis, it is difficult to change a function or an industry for MBA graduates! Well, my background is in civil engineering in a very narrow field. I want to get out of this, therefore I want to do MBA. However, what realistic job opportunities can I have with MBA if I cannot change industry?
I have relatively high GMAT score, 8+ years works of experience in different countries for different industries (though post graduate was only in civil engineering), PhD in Civil Engineering, and came to the UK from a country not many people even heart of. Therefore, so far it looks like I can get into almost any MBA course in the UK, maybe even with a scholarship. But now I need to work out what I can realistically achieve with my MBA -what's the point to go to a prestigious MBA which is famous for one thing, but I cannot get a job in that sector because of my background? If before I thought I would want to go to a business consulting, now I start wondering if I would suit a business consulting company with my background mainly in design civil engineering. Going one of two levels up in design civil engineering would not really satisfy me - salaries in engineering are not high, therefore MBA would not worth the money I spend on it. Plus, you don't need MBA for such positions, but higher position is a director, and I don't think I can get there just because of MBA. So, what can I do with MBA if it is very difficult to change a function or an industry?
By the way, could you tell me - what does it mean "to change function"? Does it mean to move from junior management to middle, or from middle to senior?
Thanks.
