Murthy as President?

President APJ Abdul Kalam's term comes to an end in July this year. And speculation is rife whether N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor of IT bellwether Infosys become India's next president?

“Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic,” President Kalam said when he was asked how he felt about the idea of Murthy succeeding him in the next term. With Kalam's blessings, Murthy has become a top-contender for the job.

However the question is, whether a businessperson has the caliber and the acumen that is required to head a politically instable and complex democracy such as India?

The issue was discussed and debated by Senior Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Desai, Brand Consultant Harish Bijoor and Political Commentator Cho Ramaswamy on CNN-IBN India 360 anchored by Sagarika Ghosh.

Would Narayana Murthy be a good choice for president?

N R Narayana Murthy is seen as a corporate leader with a difference. His image is not of a profit-chasing businessman but that of a middle-class hero who has been committed to India’s development dream.

Though Murthy has denied any interest in entering politics, he has been a vehement critic of recent government policies especially that of reservation in education and confiscating farmland for special economic zones (SEZs).

So is the country ready for an apolitical president? “No,” says political commentator Cho Ramaswamy. Murthy is unconnected with the issues governing the country and hence he does not fits the bill, he adds.

“A person who has not expressed his opinion on issues like secularism, constitutional role of the SC, judiciary and executive—may perhaps have not formed an opinion on these issues as yet. In my opinion such a person cannot be the President,” he said.

A greater segment of corporate India believes that since today's India is gauged in terms of commerce and industry, Murthy being the co-founder of India’s biggest software firm will offer a positive direction to the economy.

wat say you ???

take care...

My view is not like to have NRN as the president of the country.Today's politics is not about doing good to the people. It is instead about portraying how you care about people(pure faking). Moreover NRN is not interested in politics. So forcing him to enter the arena is not advisable.

I think Narayan Murthy would do great.

I dont think you can say Hon; A.P.J Kalam has politican tact. Still, you can see how he took india to new heights.

People like Naratan Murthy are honest and visionary. India needs such kind of leaders.

yes i agree wid kartik dat NRN can do well as the president of india.
but d Q is not of wether a businessman has the calibre to run a complex democracy, which i think NRN will do well under ne conditions, but it is his will which is of utmost importance, which we as his fellow indians shud respect.
i think a businessman is basically a thinker, and as a thinker one shud do well on d political scene or industrial, as d scene on india inc. is also not an easy one.

well nina

i agree with you that a business man is basically a thinker...

but then what i feel that a thinker who has the in and out knowledge about the problems faced by an normal citizen of india can only think for the betterment of the people...

Narayan Murthy has earned his name on his own and he deserves to be the President of India as i personally feel he would do a great job being the First Man of India...

Yeah why not? we need to have people with some good education and futuristic thinking.I hope kalam have sowed the seed and some one needs to nurture it and this can be murthy!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with u kartik, NRN has gr8 ideas for a modern idea. He is a neo-capitalist. Yet, the fact is that in a democracy like India, the powers of the president are just a formality. In reality, he holds no power like the ministry.

i agree with deepakraam politics is all about faking how you care for the people whereas NRN is not like that; he himself has declined for the post of president and he is a simple and calm man so politics is not his cup of tea

You know i recall there was a movie stating if every good man stays out of politics where do you we want our country to move towards. Its not a question that good man like NRN should join politics or is it they cup of tea?
Its more the question that if they do join, what kind of radical changes they can bring within the system. I dont say one person has the ability to change what's static from years but you can never argue that changes do come through reformers and even a minute change tends to bring revolution at times.

well i agree; but movies rarely tell u the truth and anyways in India the president hardly has any power all the power is with the prime minister and NRN is just one man he needs more people with his sort of thinking and intellect, then he can truly do something

i agree with you completely, but movies rarely tell you the truth and in India the president has hardly any power all the power of running the country is with the prime minister, and he is just one man he needs people with his intellect then he can bring in some change
