Murthy as President?
President APJ Abdul Kalam's term comes to an end in July this year. And speculation is rife whether N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor of IT bellwether Infosys become India's next president?
“Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic,” President Kalam said when he was asked how he felt about the idea of Murthy succeeding him in the next term. With Kalam's blessings, Murthy has become a top-contender for the job.
However the question is, whether a businessperson has the caliber and the acumen that is required to head a politically instable and complex democracy such as India?
The issue was discussed and debated by Senior Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Desai, Brand Consultant Harish Bijoor and Political Commentator Cho Ramaswamy on CNN-IBN India 360 anchored by Sagarika Ghosh.
Would Narayana Murthy be a good choice for president?
N R Narayana Murthy is seen as a corporate leader with a difference. His image is not of a profit-chasing businessman but that of a middle-class hero who has been committed to India’s development dream.
Though Murthy has denied any interest in entering politics, he has been a vehement critic of recent government policies especially that of reservation in education and confiscating farmland for special economic zones (SEZs).
So is the country ready for an apolitical president? “No,” says political commentator Cho Ramaswamy. Murthy is unconnected with the issues governing the country and hence he does not fits the bill, he adds.
“A person who has not expressed his opinion on issues like secularism, constitutional role of the SC, judiciary and executive—may perhaps have not formed an opinion on these issues as yet. In my opinion such a person cannot be the President,” he said.
A greater segment of corporate India believes that since today's India is gauged in terms of commerce and industry, Murthy being the co-founder of India’s biggest software firm will offer a positive direction to the economy.
