Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG, formerly HDI[3]), often abbreviated H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression.[4] Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control and competition from Japanese manufacturers.[5]
The company sells heavyweight (over 750 cc) motorcycles designed for cruising on the highway. Harley-Davidson motorcycles (popularly known as "Harleys") have a distinctive design and exhaust note. They are especially noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper style of motorcycle.[6] Except for the modern VRSC model family, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs. Harley-Davidson's attempts to establish itself in the light motorcycle market have met with limited success and have largely been abandoned since the 1978 sale of its Italian Aermacchi subsidiary.
Harley-Davidson sustains a loyal brand community which keeps active through clubs, events, and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson logo accounts for almost 5% of the company's net revenue.
Nearly a third of smartphone users will research travel plans via mobile this year
Smart device apps and mobile-optimized websites are changing the way people travel, from trip planning to boarding an airplane to how they experience destinations.
This means new and richer opportunities for marketers to connect with consumers before, during and after their trips.
eMarketer estimates that nearly 25 million US mobile users will research travel information on their mobile devices before making a trip this year.
Nearly 12 million will use the mobile channel to book their plans. The vast majority of both groups will be made up of smartphone users.
“Mobile has dramatically altered the travel experience,” said Noah Elkin, eMarketer principal analyst and author of the new report, “Mobile Travel Takes Off: Emerging Trends and Best Practices for Marketers.”
“From pre-trip planning to in-flight and on-property services to context- and location-aware destination information, mobile devices promise to transform every phase in the travel process, putting vital information—and new marketing opportunities—within hand’s reach.”
By next year, 34% of smartphone users and 31% of mobile internet users in the US will research travel via mobile. At the same time, 18% of smartphone users and 16% of mobile internet users will book travel the same way.
As consumers integrate their mobile devices into their travel plans, marketers that want to keep pace must develop innovative approaches that fit with their audience’s habits and preferences.
“An integrated, comprehensive approach will serve brands best,” said Elkin. “The more flexibly brands can offer to help their customers manage their travel—using a mobile-optimized website, apps and integration between mobile, online and offline channels—the more effective they will be. Mobile travelers, especially those carrying smartphones, are demanding, and expect suppliers to get it right the first time.”
The full report, “Mobile Travel Takes Off: Emerging Trends and Best Practices for Marketers ,” also answers these key questions:
* How are consumers using their mobile devices to plan, enhance and execute travel experiences?
* To what extent are travel suppliers and agencies using mobile as a delivery channel?
Foreign business is important, representing about one-third of U.S. industry shipments. Thus, changes in economic conditions abroad and fluctuations in currency exchange rates can materially affect the fertilizer business. China accounts for close to 33 percent of U.S. fertilizer exports; other Asia-Pacific markets, 37 percent; Latin America, 25 percent; and all other markets, 5 percent. Nitrogen is the most commonly used fertilizer, with anhydrous ammonia being the principal ingredient in most nitrogen fertilizers. Anhydrous ammonia is produced by combining atmospheric nitrogen with methane. Another related nitrogen fertilizer is urea, a combination of anhydrous ammonia and carbon dioxide. Because nitrogen-based compounds evaporate from the soil, nitrogen fertilizers must be applied each year, resulting in a relatively stable market for this commodity. Phosphate fertilizers are derived from phosphate rock. Phosphate rock is combined with sulfuric acid to yield phosphatic acid, which is further processed into DAP, the most widely used phosphatic fertilizer. Potash is mined primarily from deposits of potassium salts in Canada, Germany, Russia, the United States, and Israel. The United States exports about 55 percent of its phosphate fertilizer production, with about 30 percent of that volume going to China. About one-fifth of U.S. nitrogen fertilizer production is exported.
Despite its leading position, the United States is expected to relinquish its dominant position in phosphate fertilizers to Morocco eventually. With its phosphate deposits estimated at over 50 percent of world rock phosphate reserves, Morocco is currently the largest phosphate rock exporter, with most of its production going to Europe. China, the former Soviet Union, and India are also large phosphate fertilizer producing countries.
Agricultural chemicals has grown modestly in terms of number of establishments engaged in the industry. In five years, the number of companies has increased about 6 percent.
