POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for the design, development and ongoing management of Deakin University’s Business Intelligence
capability.
ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT
The Strategic Intelligence and Planning Unit is responsible for the provision of accurate and timely management information and
policy advice to the Senior Executives and staff of Deakin University. The Unit is responsible for student forecasting and
modeling, reporting and analytics, student surveys, institutional research, and business intelligence.
ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Director, Strategic Intelligence and Planning Unit and works closely with other Managers within the
Unit. The position will have regular contact with senior management (including the executive), eSolutions, finance, research
division, faculty administration, and other University areas in order to manage the development and implementation of Deakin’s
Business Intelligence capability. The position will have contact with officers in other tertiary institutions for collegial discussions
relating to these issues.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
? To maintain Deakin’s Business Intelligence strategy and implement its articulated goals via robust project management
methods.
? To provide high level technical expertise on the conceptual design of the Deakin data warehouse and broader Business
Intelligence capability.
? To manage the ongoing administration and maintenance of Deakin’s data warehouse, Business Intelligence environment,
Budgeting and Forecasting toolset.
? To lead a dedicated team of high level staff which will: perform requirements analysis; modelling and design; database and
end user application development; testing and implementation of an accurate and readily accessible data warehouse to
support the University’s internal and external reporting requirements.
? Ensure the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible, in
particular, those relating to equal opportunity, occupational health and safety, risk management, staff development and
staff performance planning and review.
TYPICAL DUTIES
? Scope and lead the analysis, design, development, testing and implementation of the University’s data warehouse.
? Develop in house knowledge regarding data warehousing methodologies and practice.
? Manage the performance and outcomes of technical staff working on the project.
? Manage the development of best practices and data quality assurance with custodial divisions.
? Manage the ongoing administration of Deakin’s data warehouse, particularly with reference to managing the growth,
integrity and compliance of data within and reports generated from the warehouse.
? Any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.
SELECTION CRITERIA - ESSENTIAL
Training/Qualifications (or equivalent experience):
? Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to a postgraduate qualification in information technology or
computing.
Experience:
? Demonstrated experience in provision of high level Business Intelligence advice to support the strategic goals of a dynamic
and competitive organisation.
Manager, Business Intelligence
? Demonstrated experience in managing data warehousing and Business Intelligence teams.
? Demonstrated ability to lead projects that have widespread impact in a complex organisation.
? Knowledge and experience in the application of project management methodologies.
? Experience in data warehouse methodologies and dimensional modelling (star schema).
? Expertise in Oracle relational database systems, including database design, SQL, etc.
? Experience with reporting, analytics, modelling, planning and budgeting toolsets.
? Highly developed analytical, oral and written communication skills.
? Highly developed stakeholder management, problem resolution and negotiation skills.
