What is the difference between management and leadership? I have heard that "management is a job; leadership is a role."

What do you see as the most important differentiator?

this one looks like the age old " what come first the chicken or the egg question ? "

Leadership without management is not leadership and management without managing leaders is not managment. :p

Management and Leadership are not divorced from each other but are an integrative concept. You become a leader to manage things in your day to day life......like taking inititative, to let say, to organise a party at your place for your friends etc.So leadership and management work together in principle at an individual level as well as at an organisation level.:SugarwareZ-179:

in leadership you don't have to force people to do something, if you start doing that by yourself people would fallow you...

Good Management........gives..................GREAT LEADERS......................................................

in the new economy, where value comes increasingly from the knowledge of people, and where workers are no longer undifferentiated cogs in an industrial machine, management and leadership are not easily separated. People look to their managers, not just to assign them a task, but to define for them a purpose. And managers must organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.
