Issue-less Khats get pulled over
By: Amit Bhushan Date: 7th Sept. 2016
The commercial news media widely reported how people in a political rally walked away with the Khats or in other words ‘’Khat kyou khari ho gai’’. While there would be some consternation at the remarks but these are designed so, for parties in fray to focus on real issues which are many rather than recycling old issues & tricks. Instead of taking common man for dumb who doesn’t understand and doesn’t care for anything and would walk towards instant gratification, the parties would be better off now to visualize common man as ‘game’, or people who would react in rational manner and would vote the party where they ‘feel’ that has potential to address a higher number of woes or issues. Now here again the issues cannot be ones that continue to be re-cycled & re-pedalled, rather than solved, although most political parties love to do that, like free power to farmers without addressing power distribution or arranging the requisite ‘revenues’ in government coffers; or farm loan waiver rather than making farming profitable while at the same time non-farmers being able to afford food. Some else would love to throw their hat of concern only to realize that they do not have any workable tricks to escape once in and so would want public to re-focus to some other tricks or gimmicks. A concentrated effort to even discuss what would work in not made by the political leaders or by the commercial news media, to muddle the issues for the sake of politics and then feel they should be treated as holy cows by social media and public.
When those on ‘Khats’ are either not allowed to raise questions or are not in a position to do so, they would walk away with the Khat/s, and this is a clear indicator of ‘game people’ rather than ‘dumb or stupid’ village folks or some mismanagement by ‘local workers’ as the commercial media would like us to believe. Addressing problems may require political parties to shun populism on some occasions while at other times to mobilize people towards some well-defined goals. There are various sign of dilapidation of governance in the state like non-working Primary Health Care centers, Primary Schools or even other govt. Schools and Colleges. People consider themselves lucky if they get Ration anywhere between 4-6 times/month in a year and alas, it cannot be ‘neem coated’ of dyed ‘blue’. The ‘shared auto service’ rule the roost on city road, while private ‘trekkers’ are preferred transportation mode for villages and this is because running organized Bus service either under PPP or government is not possible as the leaders are unable to control their supporters greed in mauling of such services which is help by an equally opportunistic opposition comfortable in ‘burning’ up such ‘issues’. It is anyone’s guess why the pahalwan (strongman) in politics would allow such ‘leaders’ is opposition go scot free and maintain peace with own folks while the state buses continue to go up in flames, but only commercial news media is clueless although it would like to believe that it ‘knows all’.
The ‘’people walking away with the political ‘Kahts’ ‘’, is just symbolic of the time to come. However the symbolism would most likely be lost by the political leadership hell-bent not to acknowledge their failures and drunk in their aura of power. Neither would commercial news media which is rather involved in making mocker of incidents, help assimilate the full import of the information. It also a question on the politics that claims to be focused on development that the rivers continue to be polluted with effluents by the sugar industry ruining agriculture (this has been raised by news media) even when billions are spent to maintain its health. There has been a lack of agri-processing units in the state while rise in some low level assembling units and is this only due to nature of politicking in the state by ‘all parties’. The state agri-development program have stopped promoting mixed agricultural practices and allowed farmers to focus on water intensive crops such as rice often for exports with much subsidies much to the detriments of farmers whose lands are far away from canal/rivulets. While earlier at least some efforts were seen from elected leaders to promote local crafts from the state like Carpets, Kitchen-knifes, Hand-made towels/durries/bed-sheets etc. which has now been given up for ‘Cow’, it seems. We do have some ‘shows’ where concern for ‘Swachta’ is symbolically depicted, for a day that is.
It also remains a concern that instead of promoting (business) start-ups the political leaders, system and the commercial news media remains glued on promoting up-start politicians from political families and this can be clearly seen and ‘felt’ by all. So the political Khats, issue-less as they have been will continue to be pulled over, and it is not just for a party, but for nearly all parties though leaders in each one would definitely say that they are ‘different’ and hence would remain untouched… Let’s watch the ‘Game’ evolve further…
