I don't think a hostel life is the best idea for very young children. I have seen too many cases of public school boys and girls becoming walled-in emotionally by the scars left on their mind by their hostelmates.
By the time a kid is ready to go to college however the balance begins to shift in favour of independance and freedom which a hostel (i.e. a residential program provides). Some of my happiest moments were spent as a resident at Uni., interacting with students from various streams - the artists, the poets, the business types. The wild parties and weekly orgies were a quite prized and regular feature. Still miss the mponthly 'Saturday Strip' and monthly "Sunday's for S******"
