Snehal Gaware, a final year student of Sardar Patel College of Engineering in Andheri, lived with her parents at Ninad Society in Dombivli. Sheetal, Snehal’s elder sister studies at Nottingham Trent University in the UK. Snehal who had injured her leg had been recuperating at home for the past one month. Hindurao is a private bank employee and Kalpana is a school teacher. Both remain out of the house for the whole day.
Snehal Gaware
On Thursday evening when Kalpana returned from school, she could not find Snehal at home. The worried mother checked up with all her friends, but she was nowhere to be found. She called up Hindurao and informed him that Snehal was missing. Both of them went to the Ramnagar Police in Dombivli at 6.30 pm and registered a missing complaint.
They, along with their neighbours and some of Snehal’s friends, kept searching for her till late night, without luck. On Friday morning, Kalpana opened her bed’s drawer to pull out a bedsheet, and the sight of a human hand inside shocked her. Hurriedly she rushed to Hindurao. They pulled out the drawer only to find Snehal’s body with her mouth gagged, and her hands and legs tied.
Anagha Gadkari, one of their neighbours, said, “We all rushed to Gaware’s flat hearing Kalpana’s loud wails. When we reached there, Kalpana had fainted and even Hindurao had started crying loudly. Kalpana had lost her mental balance. The thought of sleeping over her daughter’s body for an entire night was unbearable. Both of them just failed to understand how it could happen to them.” The neighbours called the police who soon came and began investigations.
Snehal’s mother, Kalpana
Ketan Jawale and Makrand Chaudhary, who live in the same apartment and are Snehal’s college mates told police that Snehal was a popular student and had many friends coming over. A youth named Hiren used to often call and inquire about Snehal’s health. Throughout the day neighbours did not see any suspicious-looking person entering or leaving the building, which has darkened the mystery surrounding Snehal’s murder.
POSSIBLE MURDER ANGLES
Prakash Kawade, Senior Police Inspector of Ramnagar Police Station in Dombivli, said, “At first we had registered a non-cognizable missing complaint in Snehal’s case, but we later changed it to murder under Section 302 of IPC. Snehal’s death has taken place due to strangulation and suffocation. Nothing has been stolen from the house, so we rule out the possibility of murder with the intention of robbery.
The murderer has not forcefully entered the house, which means Snehal knew the murderer.” Kawade added, “Our first suspect is Hiren, a resident of Borivli and Snehal’s friend, who was enquiring with Makarand and Ketan about her wellbeing. We will also interrogate Snehal’s parents after they complete her last rites. Usually the murderer wouldn’t have taken the effort to hide the body. Lastly, we will check on passers-by, labourers working at nearby buildings and the salesmen visiting homes.”
MISSING MOBILE PHONE
Snehal’s mobile phone has been missing from her residence since the murder and police suspect it to be a major evidence in the case. Snehal’s parents were trying to call her cell phone since Thursday evening, but it has been switched off. “Though the body has been found, we are yet to recover her cell phone. Her last few conversations could give us leads to the case,” Kawade said
