Well freedom of media is an important issue in India and we all know that till the date government has been very soft with media in expressing their views.
But now i think media is over doing every issue some of the big mistakes by Indian media are --:

1- Coverage of strategic actions of commandos during 26/11 attack.
2- Over highlighting Swine flue under the covers of awareness which cause situation of panic in all over India.
3- Unnecessary coverage of old news of Chinese incursions in Indian territory on which recently security adviser has criticized media.
4- Unnecessary reports on cheap topics. ex- India TV's special reports on indo-pak relations, superstitious issues like secret of lakes and doors of heaven etc

My question is that whether government should regulate and control Indian media like China and U.S.A ? What you think India media over highlight issues for T.R.P of their channels or due to news competition without considering the impact of news for country and society ?

Good topic to debate upon Gurpreet..

The media now days are just news hungry. Any story they feel worth the TRPs are labelled as news. This is rightly shown in the movie 'A Wednesday' where a news hungry journalist is willing to do anything to get the coverage and TRP.

But the more important thing is to put a complete ban on news channels like 'India TV' which shows all stupid and baseless programs and I feel even the facts are not verified.

Gone are the days of thorough Journalism where Dr. Prannoy Roy would present the news with utmost care and responsibility towards citizens of India. Not to under estimate other news leaders like Barkha Dutt and Rajdeep Sardesai. These are few of the people who will put actual news in front of the people and not the stories.

Coming to the point on having a control on media I don’t feel we should do that. Of course guidelines should be directed to them and should be followed diligently. But as far as competition is concerned, media will have to take the help of TRPs. Each and every channel live on TRPs. The thing govt need to do is manage the quality of news that is to be broadcasted and not over exaggerate the news.

Indian media is experimenting with crossing its limits...Media is probably more than just newspapers and news. We are at the threshold of a great change that is happening around and the media is largely responsible for this change.

Change is good, only if is in the interest of the society.
Incorrect information is more devastating than incomplete knowledge.
When the media channels don't have any REAL breaking news, they invent news which makes no sense what-so-ever...
Earlier the masses used to watch News make themselves aware about what is happening in the world...
Now, besides that, they watch news channel when they don't have anything else to watch and get some entertainment.
I would strongly recommend some kind of regulation (government or not) over media channels regarding the content
We all know what Freedom of Speech is... but is fair to use that freedom to like this???
