FREE BUSINESS SEMINAR AT UKZN: SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE
GOVERNANCE FOR SMMES
The Centre for Entrepreneurship at UKZN invites all small and medium
business owners and managers to a free business seminar on: Simple
and Effective Governance for SMMEs. The seminar will be presented
by Mr Carl Bates, Managing Director of the Sirdar Group, and will take
place on 10 November from 08:30 until 10:00 at the Graduate School of
Business, on the Westville campus.
A leading global entrepreneur, Mr Bates will share a powerful tool to
enable entrepreneurs to effectively implement governance in their own
businesses. He will offer practical insights and two unique tools
developed by Sirdar: a Governance Compass and a Management
Compass which will enable entrepreneurs to test the management and
governance of their enterprises.

Mr Bates believes that regardless of the industry in which one operates,
the fundamentals of running a business are the same, and it is critical
for astute management and governance to achieve business success.
He has a keen interest in the non-profit sector and has held several roles
in the United Nations Association of New Zealand (Inc.) and is a Trustee
of the United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand Trust.
Mr Bates obtained a first class Bachelor of Business Studies Honours
Degree (Accountancy) and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies
(Finance) from Massey University, New Zealand. He was awarded the
Allan Gibson and New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants
Wanganui Branch Scholarships.
As the acting Chief Executive of Quality Health New Zealand he led
Quality Health through a dramatic turnaround, positioning it strongly for
the future.
