The manufacturing activity in fibre and fibre products is one of the ages – old traditional handicrafts in India. India is primarily an agricultural country. Nature has bestowed India with wide varieties of vegetables, tree, shrubs and different kinds of grasses, which provide fibre for numerous utility articles and decorative fancy artifacts.
India abounds in vegetable fibre sources such as sisal, sun – hemp, ramie, banana stem, pineapple and screw pine leaves. Grasses such as moonj and sabai also yield fibre. Extraction of fibre from plants and grasses and manufacture of utility articles are traditional occupations in rural India.
