Expansion Plans
Another global player in the country, TNT India, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Netherlands-based TPG NV specialises in the international segment of the business. Now, to establish its hold in the retail segment, TNT India is starting the second phase of expansion .
In the next 15 months, the company has plans to double its existing network of 22 outlets in 16 cities. We're looking at smaller outlets for a cross-section of non-regular users," says, managing director, TNT India. It has also implemented a massive investment in information technology across its centres in India.
On the other hand, FedEx has also out chalked ambitious plans. As a first step, the company has tied up with Prakash AirFreight for delivery and pick up of packages. Prakash meanwhile has overnight got a boost because of its association with FedEx. Even though it is a big player in the trucking industry, it has so far only a marginal presence in courier business. Today, Prakash says that it services 475 locations through 200 branches and 1825 employees.
That's not all. FedEx has also tied up with Jeena & Company for nationwide customs clearance. It will integrate all the Prakash AirFreight and Jeena offices with their own systems and both the companies will operate under the FedEx brand.
The transnational has also outlined a multi-focused growth charter. First, the company has increased the capacity of its flight to 87 tonnes. Secondly, it is increasing its branded reach from 6 service centres to 36 this year and will expand it to 136 by end 2003.
"We have recently trained 300 people from 34 authorised service participants to familiarise them with the quality of the services we offer," says Birendra Ahluwalia, marketing manager, Middle East, Indian subcontinent and sub-Sahara Africa, FedEx.
