Examinations - has it killed education

I think exams are a must inorder to judge :-
a) The efficiency of a person to reproduce the things he has learnt
b) Check out his analytical & reasoning skills.

i belive exams sld b very practical (not in class room) not from books material
these will b something which will help guys like us, all exams are for judging our capabilities and abilities.....
this bookish material examination is really killing us

While it might be true that examinations as the sole criterion for judging performance might not be a good idea , examinations can still be used as one of the many performance criteria. Examinations can be combined with other tools like projects , assignments and presentations to judge a student's performance. The weightages for the different tools would have to be carefully chosen after taking into consideration the nature of the course as well as the depth of the course. If the subject calls for a mere understanding of the facts , the weightage of examinations can be more . However if the subject has more practical implementaions , the weightages for the projects can be made substantially higher. Also rather than questioning the usefulness of exams , it would be better if we focus on the nature / quality of the questions in the examination . If the questions call for a mere cramming of the subject , it would not necessarily be a good judgement of the students abilities. On the other hand , if the questions were to test the understanding of the concepts and the applications that it could have , it calls for a larger amount of analysis /thinking from the student . Such an examination would be more ideal to hudge the student

i think all examinations should test the understanding of students and not their learning capacity. I think all exams should be MCQ's.. ;)
They are the best.. you at least have the satisfaction of having the right answer right in front of u.. :)

In this regard, the proposed system of grading instead of marks and removal of board exams till class XII is really appreaciateable.

one more thing; main emphasis of both student & teacher is on how to get maximum marks in Exam; not getting the real learning of the subject.

Examination cannot kill education. There must be someway for a person to know his/her level of understanding.Examination is a way to measure it.The way examinations are conducted has an impact on education.Examination must truly measure a person's understanding of the concept and must tests his/her application level of a certain concept.Instead examination encourages ppl to do rote learning.Question papers doesn't have questions which makes students to think.Thats why only 1% of students who take IIT-JEE or CAT qualify for it.The methodolgy for conducting the exams must change which will change the way students learn. This will immensely help students as well as the society in producing real learners.

Whats the real reason for having an examination? The way our system works, a person who can mug up and reproduce well on a sheet of paper is the one thats graded somehow more intelligent.

So for one, the system gives way too much of an importance to memory skills. Other than that handling exam pressure, delivering on time etc, help you in discipline and prepare you for the decision making process that you will eventually face in life.

I'm of the opinion that if somehow the system could be more practical in its approach, our youth would be much more polished and talented.

hey
i guess its not examinations but the pattern on which these are conducted killing education.
Examinations based on case studies, real live issues are the best way to judge a person on his skill set and not mugging powers.

Yes i agree that examinations have killed education to a great extent , because the quality of courses being offered by ,most universities has degraded over the years, students are being made to leran things & reproduce them in exams as they have read it, it is killing innovatin & curbing the thinking process to a great extent.

Examinations are essential. If we need to get things by practical. Then we need a good infrastructure which needs money. The management of the institutions should get this infrastructure to the institute. But this wont happen very easily as it involves money. Thats is why we are always seated with paper and pen, which is not much costly.

Having exams is fine. The problem is students are required to write lengthy answers in exams, which requires them to nearly memorise all the points in the answer even for questions of little sense like characteristics, merits or demerits of something. Rather exams should assess the conceptual knowledge of the student by way of objective questions or questions whose answers are no longer than 10 lines.

if u talk about the way that examinations are happening in india, yeah, definitely it is spoiling the whole education system.

Yes...I believe the focus is not in knowledge but in securing better score. Also, quite often, the exam rates the one who can cram better high than a person with better practical knowledge
