History
Suzlon was founded by Tulsi Tanti in 1995, when he was working in a family-owned textile company. In that year, India's shaky power grid and the rising cost of electricity offset any profits the company would make. With the help of some of his friends of Rajkot, he moved into wind energy production as a way to secure the textile company's energy needs, and founded Suzlon Energy. In 2001, Tanti sold off the textile business, so he could focus on the development of his wind energy business. In 2009, Suzlon is still actively run by Tulsi Tanti, now in the role of Chairman and Managing Director.
In 2003, Suzlon got its first sale in USA, with an order from DanMar & Associates to supply 24 turbines in southwestern Minnesota.
Suzlon Rotor Corporation in 2006 began producing the blades in Pipestone, Minnesota in the United States. Among its clients is Wind Capital Group.
In the year 2006, Suzlon reached a definitive agreement for acquisition of Belgium firm Hansen Transmissions, specializing in gearboxes for wind turbines, for $565 million. In 2007, the company purchased a controlling stake in Germany's REpower which valued the firm at US$ 1.6 billion.
In June 2007, Suzlon had signed a contract with Edison Mission Energy (EME) of US for delivery of 150 wind turbines of 2.1 MW in 2008 and a similar volume to be delivered in 2009. EME had an option not to purchase the 150 turbines due to be delivered in 2009, which it has chosen to exercise.
In November 2009, the company decided to sell 35% stake of Hansen through placing new shares. It appointed Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley as the managers and book runners for the same

Genesis and Growth
The seeds of Suzlon were sown by Mr. Tulsi R. Tanti’s venture into the textile industry. Faced with soaring power costs and the infrequent availability of power, he looked to wind energy as an alternative. Beginning with a wind farm project in the Indian state of Gujarat in 1995, with a capacity of just 3 MW - he set forth to acquire the basic technology and varied expertise to set up Suzlon Energy Limited - India’s first home-grown wind technology company.
By the end of 2008, Suzlon:
• Supplied over 6,000 MW across the world
• Registering 100% growth rate year on year
• Was ranked the 3rd leading wind power equipment* manufacturer
• Earned a global market share of 9 %
• Maintained market leadership in Asia
• Suzlon installed over 4000 MW of wind turbine capacity, acquired over 50% market share and reigned as the market leader for the 9th year in India
Manufacturing Overview
The global wind energy industry is currently characterized by growing demand, limited by a restricted supply. Foreseeing the challenges early on, Suzlon adopted a mix of manufacturing strategies to ensure unfettered growth.
• We are the most vertically integrated wind turbine maker in the world, with manufacturing capabilities for all key components
• We are globally integrated, with production facilities in China, India,USA catering to key markets
• Our manufacturing footprint covers the gamut of wind power equipment

As a result, Suzlon has consistently grown at a rate faster than the industry - more than twice the industry average over the past
four years*.
Global Integration
Our ‘global experience, local expertise’ approach to talent capital has ensured a 23-nationality multi-faceted talent pool that goes wide and deep. This gives us the advantage of leveraging local talent and creating a truly global expert workforce. Our continuing growth in our operations in all key international wind energy markets and presence in all emerging markets is further strengthening our global integration.
Currently, we do aerodynamics research in The Netherlands, develop wind turbines and components in Germany, and optimize gearboxes in Belgium. Our manufacturing footprint spans 3 countries: China, India and USA, and our 13 units make all key components of wind turbines. This is a testimonial to our focus on global integration and our passion to make Suzlon a company as global as the wind.
Expanding Global Presence
In order to increase its international wind energy market share, Suzlon plans to continue to grow its overseas operations. Suzlon considers its key international markets to be:
• Australia, which has sites with optimal wind conditions. The Australian government is officially encouraging a sustainable and internationally competitive renewable energy industry
• China, because of its high demand for energy. The Chinese government is also encouraging the development of renewable energy sources through favorable policies & targets
• Key growth markets in Europe, including Germany, France, Portugal,Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, which have the potential for further development and investment in renewable energy — wind power in particular

The Indian team is also responsible for supporting the operations of the global fleet through collecting data from the field 24/7, 365 days a year from a fleet of over 4000 turbines worldwide, analysing it by experts and triggering the essential development programs. To support this intitiative a modern 24/7 monitoring centre is being established in Pune.
• Gearbox technology in Belgium
With the best technology to create products that deliver high performance and reliability in tough and diverse operating Suzlon develops gearboxes out of Belgium through the Group Company, Hansen Transmissions.
Suzlon One Earth
The Suzlon One Earth campus is a unique corporate headquarter spread over 10 acres of land in Hadapsar, Pune, India. The place was conceived with a business and functional need to bring all business verticals and corporate services under one roof, which although linked to each other would be independent enough to be able to perform as per their respective needs and requirements.
The campus is aptly named One Earth as Suzlon’s business believes in caring for the Earth; it further highlights the earth’s unique existence as an eco system, signifies a unified view of the planet and reinforces the company’s belief that co-existence and responsible usage of natural resources are the only way to achieve sustainability.
Suzlon is presently operating in 21 countries and the occupancy profile of One Earth is for a 24X7 global shared service and strategic ‘think tank’ for the Group across all verticals and locations. The campus would be the knowledge and support base for global operations.
