Employee Retention of Nike : Nike, Inc. is a major publicly traded sportwear and equipment supplier based in the United States. The company is headquartered near Beaverton, Oregon, which is part of the Portland metropolitan area. It is the world's leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel[3] and a major manufacturer of sports equipment with revenue in excess of US$18.6 billion in its fiscal year 2008 (ending May 31, 2008). As of 2008, it employed more than 30,000 people worldwide. Nike and Precision Castparts are the only Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the state of Oregon, according to The Oregonian.
The company was founded in January 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight,[1] and officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978. The company takes its name from Nike (Greek Νίκη pronounced [níːkɛː]), the Greek goddess of victory. Nike markets its products under its own brand as well as Nike Golf, Nike Pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike Skateboarding and subsidiaries including Cole Haan, Hurley International, Umbro and Converse. Nike also owned Bauer Hockey (later renamed Nike Bauer) between 1995 and 2008.[4] In addition to manufacturing sportswear and equipment, the company operates retail stores under the Niketown name. Nike sponsors many high profile athletes and sports teams around the world, with the highly recognized trademarks of "Just do it" and the Swoosh logo.

Pros
I love everything about this brand! The history behind Nike is what motivated me to bring my A game to work everyday, to be involved with my community, and especially motivate others to do the same.
Cons
During the time of my employment with Nike, there was an absence of strong leadership & communication. If there is no Coach, how can a team play effectively. I have outlined a few key points why Nike will remain out of the Top 10 places to work:

No organization/lack of structure: There is no management and no authority. Leads typically handle all store operations, not upper management.

Employee Retention: Athletes have no concept of what customer service is and how to retain consumers or even build relationships with consumers. There is no formal training. Long time employees no longer are excited about expressing themselves the Nike way.

Lack of Sportsmanship/ No Team building: It’s starts at the top. The communication between Nike Retail and HQ is non-existent.
“If the leader of a team doesn’t understand the power of teamwork and isn’t prepared to lead the effort in terms of setting an example and dedicating time to it, then the chances of success are basically zero”

FORTUNE -- CEO pay is headed skyward once again, leaving their non-executive minions far behind. Median CEO salaries jumped 27% in 2010 while overall worker pay increased by just 2.1% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, USA Today recently reported.

"The current levels of compensation for CEOs in corporate America are, in a word, outrageous," Jack Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group, said to me in a conversation several years ago, a conversation that covered a number of topics, including the real levels of growth created by corporate CEOs.

CEO compensation practices at U.S. companies have been in the spotlight for a very long time. Back in 1977, Peter Drucker wrote that CEO pay should be no more than 25 times average worker pay. In a 1984 essay, he updated that to say that no more than 20 times average worker pay was appropriate

It was not until my current job that I realized that I preferred a job that actually used my skills and abilities, as opposed to the "cool" careers that I had previously pursued.

Although I did have five jobs, most were part-time. I had three main jobs, including my current position.

Job No. 1 was with a standardized test preparation company. I had worked for them for two summers during college, and worked for them again the summer after I graduated. I was offered a full-time position with them, but I turned it down to look for another job.

Each of the three summers I worked at the test prep company, I needed to introduce myself to an entirely new cast of colleagues. The low rate of employee retention struck me as a warning sign I saw no reason to disregard.

I had no idea what kind of career I wanted, so I decided to turn down a readily available position and pursue an unrealistic pipe dream instead. Having always been an avid baseball fan, I thought I'd see if I could work in major league baseball.

In an effort to further industry sustainability efforts, NIKE, Inc. released its Environmental Apparel Design Tool. Based on Nike’s Considered Design Index, the release of the tool aims to accelerate collaboration between companies, fast-track sustainable innovation and decrease the use of natural resources like oil and water.

Designed and built by Nike over seven years with a six million dollar investment, the software-based Environmental Apparel Design Tool helps designers to make real time choices that decrease the environmental impacts of their work.

Recognizing the decline of natural resources and the need to move to a low-carbon economy, the tool is a practical way to rate how apparel designs score in reducing waste and increasing the use of environmentally preferred materials while allowing the designers to make real time adjustments.

Nike is committed to open innovation and welcomes others building and improving on this tool.

“This tool is about making it simple for designers to make the most sustainable choices right at the start of the product creation process. Over the past four years it has proved to be invaluable at Nike and has helped us create products with a higher sustainability standard,” said Hannah Jones, Vice President of Nike Sustainable Business and Innovation.

“By releasing the tool we want others to improve on it and we hope to inspire further collaboration to create global industry standards for a level playing field, encourage widespread industry adoption of sustainable design practices and have more sustainable products available for the consumer.”
