Five core values stitch together the fabric that is El Paso Corporation. Stewardship. Integrity. Safety. Accountability. Excellence. These five simple values are meant to be our guideposts for every action we take as employees or board members. They give us a shared set of principles and beliefs. They are not overly complicated and do not need a great deal of explanation. In most ways they speak for themselves, but they are very powerful reminders of our obligations to each other, to our customers, to our shareholders, and to the communities where we live and work.
These five values are the foundation on which the El Paso Code of Business Conduct is built. This document spells out a principles-based system for how we conduct ourselves. It is a reminder to all of us of the high standards demanded by our owners, the shareholders. A simple translation of this Code is: Do the right thing, without exception. Not just when it is convenient or expedient. Not just when people are watching. Not just when it improves our financial results, but consistently. Without exception. Always.
I am committed to living out the principles of the El Paso Code of Business Conduct everyday. I expect you, as an employee or board member of this company, to read this Code, understand it, and live by it. Refer to it if you find something unclear or if a situation arises in your workday that raises a question in your mind about the proper course of action. Whether it involves you directly or indirectly, it is your responsibility to reach out to the company to get the proper answer. There are a number of ways to seek guidance.
Pointing your career in the right direction doesn’t mean the same direction as everyone else. Take a minute to think about what is important to you.
Do you care about doing meaningful work for competitive pay and benefits? Do you want the opportunity for career growth in a large, financially stable public company? Is it important for you to balance work and family? If you answered “yes” to any of these, working for El Paso Corporation may be the right direction for your career.
Headquartered in Houston, El Paso Corporation provides natural gas and related energy products in a safe, efficient and dependable manner. Our two core businesses are Pipelines, and Exploration and Production. Our 42,000-mile interstate pipeline system transports more than one-quarter of daily natural gas consumption in the country. We explore for and produce natural gas across the U.S., and in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and Egypt.
El Paso doesn’t build power plants, but we fuel them with natural gas, which means there is a lot riding on what we do. If we don’t do our jobs, power plants don’t run, cities don’t light up, hospitals close their doors, and homes go without heat. We believe we do important and meaningful work.
What else makes El Paso different? It’s really the entire package.
You may choose to work at our corporate headquarters in the 4th largest city in the country or at one of dozens of other locations throughout the country.
Your pay and benefits will be competitive and you’ll have clear lines of career growth, both vertical and horizontal.
You’ll be supported by a company that believes strongly in balancing work and family in addition to giving back to the community.
New filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission hardly mince words about the hastened exit of longtime El Paso Corp. leader William Wise, but they also outline some handsome parting perks and note that three of Wise's relatives have been on the company payroll.
"El Paso terminated the employment of William A. Wise" as chairman and CEO last month, the Houston energy company says in new SEC documents. Wise's previously announced departure as leader of the revamping company had previously not been described in such blunt terms. But Wise leaves anything but empty-handed, according to filings made late last week.
Also in the SEC documents, the company reveals that one of Wise's sons-in-law last year received $170,531 as an employee for El Paso or one of its subsidiaries. Joining him on the El Paso payroll was another of Wise's unnamed sons-in-law, who in 2002 was paid $74,174. And the filings mention that a Wise sister-in-law also was an employee, earning $62,779 from the company last year.
While his three relatives were averaging a combined salary in the low six figures in 2002, Wise's salary topped $1.4 million. Wise also received about $485,000 in additional compensation last year.
