Walk the Talk
with Bro. Edwin
Bro. Edwin has been assigned the task of St. Xavier’s Boarding for one year. He put all his heart and soul to make this place a beautiful home for the kids. He has utilized the entire place in farming, gardens and planting trees the proceeds of which is used for the welfare of the boarders. He has best utilized all the unused old wood in making benches for the children to sit and read. Basket ball court is on its way. They are looking forward for computer education center in school, the work of which is in progress. They have planted around 200 trees in and around the campus.
He has sorted out specific timings for food, study, work and exercise that have helped the kids to stay healthy mentally and physically. The food is very simple, healthy and nutritious (Masoor Dal and Bulgar, Bhakri and Onion) and the vegetables cultivated in the fields around.
He has encouraged the kids to participate in various activities like sports and drama. He often organizes picnics for the kids, this year they went to Saputara in Madhya Pradest and Ankai Hills near by.
According to him the reason for the poor financial conditions of the farmers is due to the absence of major industries other than Indian oil and the railway yard which provide very little and/or temporary employment. Hence the only source of income is agriculture.

SOCIO–ECONOMIC STUDY
Banabai Katkade
Initially reluctant to speak to us but when said that it was regarding her sons studies then she agreed. She is the mother of Nitin. Their Financial condition is very poor. She has sent her son to school so that he gets a better life. They want to give the best to their son so he studies and brings a better standard of living to his family. They think high of education and are willing to shift but due to high cost of living elsewhere they can’t think of it.
They earn their livelihood by breaking stones (Wakari) which is a very unpredictable source of income. The money is proportional to the work they do and hence all the family members have to work. Their income is equal to their expenses, hardly anything is saved. Many a times they have borrowed at high interest rates to meet their daily expenses. She wants that her son should not go through the same hardships as they have gone through.
In her family only her younger brother in law is educated. Since they have no agricultural land they are heavily dependent on the work available, hence the source of income is variable in nature.

Abhay P. Nikalje
He is an auto driver and he repents that he lost the opportunity to education that he had when he was young. He could not complete his education till std. 10 coz he felt that life was easy. He came from a well to do family, money wasn’t an issue at that time and he owned a Maruti omni and a big house, however as time passed by he spent all the money. Today he has nothing but a small house a hired auto rickshaw, wife, mother, two sons and a daughter to look after. He repents that had he studied he would have got a better job in a factory and would have made a better living.
Today he makes his livelihood by driving an auto the income of which is variable. He has to pay a daily rent of Rs. 60, but what he earns is far less to meet his expenses. He also has a debt for which he pays a monthly installment of Rs.1200. All in all his income is equal to his expenses and his saving is nil.
He had undergone a training session at Mysore for counseling in HIV/AIDS, however there was no
requirements for counselors at the near by hospitals. People suffering were averse and not willing to undergo counseling. There is a new center for HIV/AIDS coming nearby which could be of great importance to him as it could be a fixed source of income for him. However he is not very sure when the project would materialize. He is also interested in moving to cities; however his variable income doesn’t allow him to do that.

More than anything he is more concerned about his children’s education and does his level best to give them all that is possible. In fact to make addition to his limited needs he also participates in bands as a singer in “Bhajani Mandals”, in church, at weddings etc.
Kamalbai Dashrath Sangale
Her family is a joint family consisting of husband, three sons, one daughter and mother in law. The husband works in the factory, their standard of living is average. The family is dependent on him for livelihood. She does farming in the fields around the house. The main crops cultivated are bajra, maize, onions, groundnuts etc. but bajra is only used for house hold consumption. The rest of the produce is sold in the Manmad market. She also does wakari and often goes to factories to stitch gunny bags for onions. They have 3 cows and 2 goats.
From what we observed, her husband appeared to be strict
Bhimraj Karvari Wadhavne
His family comprises of three sons, a brother and wife. He is a farmer by occupation. The income earned is very low, expenses are very high, however he manages to save. He has debts created out of agriculture. He cultivates onions, wheat, green chilies, brinjal and Bengal gram. Whatever is produced is sold in Manmad and Yeola markets. The availability of work is throughout the year but he feels that agriculture commands hard work of 16 hours a day and he
XAVIER INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT & RESEARCH

is tired of hard work. He is ready to work in city as well relocate in the nearby cities. In fact he was a manager in a small company near by but he was out of work due to its closure. This is reason for his shift to farming.
During his spare time he goes to villages to meet his relatives in the nearby villages. And he is also a member of the “Swadhyay Parivar” which conducts “Satsang”
(religious songs and prayers)
He places a high importance to education which is why he wants his son to study and move ahead in life so that he doesn’t have to face the hardships as he does. He wants him to complete graduation and find a job in factory rather than doing agriculture.
He believes that a farmer is “Annadatta”. He feels that new thoughts of the city should transcend to villages which would bring in new thoughts and better way of life to them.
Gorakh Dagdu Sangle
He is the son of Daulatram Dagdu Sangde but we find a great difference in the perception between him and his father. He completed his matriculation in Panewadi itself but finds it’s difficult to get a permanent job in factories nearby. Sometimes he gets temporary work in the factory nearby for painting, repairs etc which usually takes place in the months of January and March. His family comprises of his father, mother, one brother and one sister. He is

Hindu – Wanjari by caste. They celebrate all the Hindu festivals. Marathi is their spoken language.
He could not perceive his further education coz of poor financial condition. Whatever is earned is spent so there is very little or no savings at all. Agriculture is carried out with little water hence the crops grown are bajra, maize since they require less water. Most of the produce is sold in the Manmad market. They strongly believe in superstitions this is evident from the following incidence, his elder sister died of some illness they attribute the cause to black magic.
Navnath Daulatram Sangade
His family comprises of his wife and his elder brothers family. He is a farmer. Whatever is earned is spent, no saving, huge debts (loss in onions). He did not pursue further education because he didn’t take it seriously that time. His brother works for railways and he is the bread winner of the family. He tries to collect information on latest advancements in agriculture. The major produce in his field comprises of onion, bajra, ground nut, wheat and maize. Most of the produce is sold in Manmad and Nandgaon. He is aware of the bank systems and the market. This year he had a bumper crop of onion which usually fetches Rs. 700 – Rs. 800 per quintal. But this year the rates were Rs. 150 – Rs. 160 per quintal. This led to huge losses and in turn huge debts.

INFERENCE
Even though the people here are educated if not up to std. 10, they dependent only on agriculture due to the absence of major companies around. The farming here is
unorganized and unplanned which may lead to all the farmers growing the same crop resulting in lower price for the produce.
Their
perspective
towards
education
is
very
broad,
however due to poor financial conditions they cannot pursue the same. They are very superstitious. There is no discrimination on the basis of gender.
RECOMMENDATION
Planned and organized farming Finding new markets with better prices Better governance Help of Panchayats for better co-ordination Better awareness through T.V and Radio Help from NGOs

LEARNINGS
Mumbai is not India Being born and bought up in Mumbai, it was an eye opening experience for us. It was like a new world for us. The people their problems are so different. We knew about these but it was the first time we experienced it.
Team building (students) Their co-ordination is excellent, given any assignment, they know whom to follow, or who will lead, no chaos no fights.
Working despite hardships (students & people) Having so many problems especially financial, they believe in moving forward. Students know why they are staying is the boarding and they know what to do. People send their kids to school coz they don’t want their kids to fall in the same situation.
High value for education Financial crises are the only thing that is taking them away from education. All have positive perception about education.

The availability of work is throughout the year but he feels that agriculture commands hard work of 16 hours a day and he

is tired of hard work.
