It is the cheapest and the best source of rural credit. The rate of interest is low. Since 1951, the co-operative credit movement has started helping the farmers in a big manner.
During 1989-90 there were about 88,000 primary agricultural credit societies. The stranglehold of the moneylenders on the peasants is not met by the co-operatives.
