Classification of Trade Union
1) Craft union - recruiting members from specific trade or occupation. Often recruits came into the union through an apprenticeship system.
Originally, craft unions aimed to preserve jobs within the trade exclusively for their members. Technological change has eliminated many traditional craft skills. Unions have survived by opening membership to related occupations.
2) Industrial union- such as the national of mineworkers in Britain, I G metal in Germany. They aim to represent all employees in a specific industry regardless of their type of work.
Long dominant in Germany, they are a more recent phenomena in some other countries, particularly in the UK
3) General unions- cover various trades and industries with few restrictions on potential membership. Some are so large and broad ranging that they have been termed ‘super unions’
4) Occupational unions- recruit members within a particular Occupation or group such as teacher’s police and fire fighters
5) White collar union- concentrating non manual occupations such as banking
