"The Role of Perceived Self-Efficacy in the Formation of Entrepreneurial Risk Perceptions"
Abstract: If opportunity recognition lies at the heart of entrepreneur-like behavior, then we need to better
understand the antecedents of opportunity perceptions. Perceived opportunity was hypothesized as
situational, depending on perceptions of competence. Results demonstrated: (1) perceived self-efficacy
directly influences perceptions of opportunity and threat; (2) self-efficacy indirectly influences strategic risk
taking through opportunity and threat perceptions; (3) effects are task-specific. Research design used
experiments to manipulate task-specific self-efficacy. Self-efficacy changes were significant antecedents
of changes in opportunity recognition and risk taking. Results suggest broad implications for managerial
decision-making research (e.g., prospect theory).

TEACHING EXPERIENCE and PHILOSOPHY
Successful, lengthy experience with teaching executives, non-traditional students, non-business majors,
honor students. Consistently excellent evaluations.

My Spring 2002 student team swept all of the top prizes at the Northwest Venture Championship for their
plan helping a top geneticist launch a genomics-based drug discovery company. The students’ efforts
have also led to the new venture acquiring an experienced CEO and funding possibilities.

Most important, though, has been our students’ success at hands-on, experiential field projects,
especially those helping with technology transfer and with rural economic development. Under the
TEAMS initiative, my student team projects include:
> Technology commercialization (e.g., novel technologies from INEEL)
> Economic development projects (e.g., feasibility study for next-generation co-op)
> Consulting to economic development organizations (e.g., industry cluster analyses)
> Consulting to ‘gazelle’ high-growth entrepreneurs
> Consulting for social entrepreneurs

In 2005, the SBA and the Kauffman Foundation awarded their Best Practices Award for “Educational
Efforts to Promote Entrepreneurship” to TEAMS and TechConnect (http://tinyurl.com/6ko63 )

Teaching Philosophy:
* Emphasis on ‘lighting a fire’ model of teaching versus ‘filling a vessel’ model – engaging students via
hands-on projects, both in-class experiential exercises and real-world field projects.

* Emphasis of changing how students think, increasing their abilities to think strategically and to think
entrepreneurially. Increasing not just skill acquisition but also increasing students’ self-efficacy at critical
strategic and entrepreneurial tasks.

* Encouraging true collaboration via self-managed cross-functional student project teams and via genuine
partnerships with outside clients (across campus [non-business units], across other schools, and across
geographic boundaries [projects in other states]).

Key Current Project Innovations:
* Economic development projects (e.g., developing hydroponics industry in eastern Idaho).

* Assessing commercialization potential for new technologies (from federal research labs, College of
Engineering, local industry)

* Student-designed experiential exercises.

Current Course Development:
* Virtual incubator class: Revised capstone experience where student teams (with heavy support from
community and campus experts) assist potential high-growth entrepreneurs to develop business plans
and business models worthy of angel/venture capital.

* Emerging Technology Entrepreneurship: Assisted development of a joint MBA/engineering course
where student teams write and submit SBIR/STTR grants.

* Technology Commercialization (overlapping above)
13
* Financing the New Venture
* Economic Development (being developed for Honors program)
* Social Entrepreneurship / Sustainable Entrepreneurship (also developed for Honors program)

Boise State University (1999-2005) Consistently above-average evaluations.
Boise State has initiated a formal outcomes assessment program for graduating seniors that all of
the capstone instructors were involved in developing and implementing. This has proven a great boon to
my teaching and provides solid evidence that my students are learning.
