Vision and Mission – Future Directions
Position vision and mission for academic affairs to reflect current beliefs and aspirations for the future.
? Using the academic affairs MVG statement as a foundation, review alignment of statement with emerging
SIGs and other institutional priorities.

Academic Innovation
College Connections
The College Connections program will improve the efficiency of program operations, expand opportunities
available to students in current partner schools, explore opportunities to engage new partner schools, and
support the enrollment goals of the college.
? Secure and implement a customized enrollment management system that will support the growth and
development of College Connections by integrating processes and facilitating access to accurate
information for students, parents, and both high school and college personnel.
? Develop a new instructor orientation program.

Experiential Learning
The office of experiential learning will improve internal and external systems to provide more students access
to well-planned, supervised, and assessed experiential learning programs.
? Strengthen community engagement with and understanding of experiential learning at JCC.
? Develop additional undergraduate research possibilities through research and personal contact with
existing higher learning institutions.
? Strengthen collaboration with Counseling Center relative to formalizing process in the development of
resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, etc.
? Increase the percentage of graduating students whose studies include experiential learning in some
form.
? Identify and secure additional resources that will support internships, undergraduate research, and
other forms of experiential learning across the college.

Global Initiatives
The office of international outreach will further globalize the JCC experience by increasing the number of
international students enrolled and strengthening the systems related to study abroad and international
student support.
International Outreach
JCC’s office of international outreach engages global partners and recruits and supports international students who
will globalize the campus experience for all while supporting the college’s enrollment goals.
Study Abroad
JCC provides short-term, semester, yearlong, and summer study abroad and internship opportunities that combine
academic rigor with experiential learning through immersion in an international setting.
? Increase international student enrollments by 25%.
? Strengthen support systems for international students and domestic students studying abroad.
? Strengthen faculty support systems and operational planning, including emergency preparedness, for
study abroad programs.
? Systematize a balanced annual menu of short-term study abroad opportunities.

Honors
The honors program will improve systems and processes that broaden student options and increase the
number of students completing the program.
? The Honors Program will add student representation to the Honors Task Force.
? The Honors Program will clarify the ways that a student can create an individualized honors course. A
student initiated web-based form will be created.
? The Honors Program will create two honors transfer agreements with four-year institutions.
? The percentage of Honors Program students achieving the honors citation will increase.

Academic Policies
Academic Standings Committee
? To review and, where appropriate, recommend improvements in alignment of policies with student
success goals.

Academic Retention
To facilitate implementation of academic policies and practices which will support student retention and success.
? Implement the next phase of the ARI initiative, to include action steps involving instructional innovation as
well as other priority directions.

Accreditation
To facilitate a process of institutional review which will contribute to development of the PRR for Middle States.
Middle States Periodic Review Report
? Complete and submit the PRR by June 2016.

Assessment
To refine institutional assessment processes with a focus on closing the loop on dissemination and use of results
and on the links between assessment planning, and budgeting.
Institutional Assessment
? The college should build upon its pilot institutional effectiveness report to create a model for regular,
organized reporting of the outcomes of the various measures of institutional effectiveness which will
keep its constituents fully informed about progress toward the achievement of institutional goals.
? The college, led by the planning council and the institutional effectiveness team, should devise and
implement a system to assess its method for measuring institutional effectiveness.
? Create and maintain a system to support the creation and assessment of learning outcomes which
occurs outside the structure of credit courses.
Student Learning Outcomes
? Develop a process by which program’s will clearly identify how the three infused outcomes of critical
reasoning, tech competency, and information literacy are infused into their programs.
? Develop a pilot plan to guide programs (including general education) to emphasize (and designate in
TracDat) the progression of learning (I, P, etc…) introduced to proficiency or more proficiency).
? Develop a plan to increase communication about, awareness of, and understanding of program
student learning outcomes.

Community Cultural Center
Galleries
Continue to build and enhance internal and external partnerships with particular focus on globalization.
? Apply for grant(s) for additional artwork for our Global Photography Collection which will infuse global
concepts and perspectives throughout the JCC experience.
? Create a communication plan which systematically enhances the connections between the gallery
and the art department faculty and students, honors program, and College Connections that will make
effective use of new technologies and will enhance academic excellence and thus enhance robust
enrollments.
Theater
Enhance both student participation and committee input.
? Increase enrollment in the Theatre Practicum courses.
? Reinvigorate the Scharmann Committee.
? Produce one student produced play “Triffles.”

Curriculum Innovation
Create and implement a flexible and coherent structure for facilitating the process of curriculum innovation at the
program, project, and partnership level.
? Identify targeted and new academic program directions aligned with student demand, workforce needs,
and institutional resources.
SUNY Transfer Mobility and Other Initiatives
? Develop DegreeWorks degree planner module to comply with SUNY’s upcoming requirements.
? Compare current JCC program offerings with SUNY transfer pathways to determine if Liberal Arts &
Sciences degrees transfer pathway options should be expanded or if any new SUNY pathways have
been developed.
Academic Program/Model Development
? Identify and share strategies for optimizing instruction delivered over winterim, spring break, and
summer sessions.
Technology-Enhanced Instruction
? Develop faculty media centers where faculty can develop audio, video, 3D print images, and other
specialized media products to support their courses.
? Develop and operationalize a course review and refresh plan for online courses to institutionalize
continuous course improvement.
? Implement assessment tools that will compare the outcomes of technology-enhanced instruction to
traditional instruction with the intent of identifying opportunities for improvements.
? Expand training/educational opportunities related to technology-enhanced instruction for underserved
segments of the faculty including new faculty, adjunct faculty, and College Connections faculty.
Academic Partnerships
? Identify and implement strategic new alliances with external partners.

Curriculum Committee
? Implement the alignment of JCC course schedule types with SUNY/SED schedule types.
? Research most effective methods and best practices for course description development and develop
guidelines.

General Education Committee
? Successfully update the 2011 General Education Progress Report for inclusion in the college’s Middle
States Periodic Review Report.
? Lead the campus community in a year-long review of the college’s General Education requirements,
with an eye toward developing a more cohesive and transparent framework that integrates into
students’ degree programs and supports student retention.
? Improve assessment of those general education requirements supervised by the General Education
Committee (information literacy; technical competency; critical reasoning; and values, ethics, and
diverse perspectives).

Developmental Studies
Evaluate and revise program processes and address specific course needs.
? Evaluate and revise the mechanisms for placement into developmental courses and how these influence
the developmental studies program.
? Pilot innovative developmental course models to accelerate students’ progress while assuring
preparedness into credit-bearing coursework.
? Further develop course options to broaden available electives for DS students that relate to specific
disciplines.
? Develop and implement measures to ensure availability of core program courses (On-Course) at all
campus sites each semester.

Extension Sites and Other Locations
? Identify product development strategies to support the viability of the Cattaraugus County Campus.

Faculty Strength and Support
Create optimum support systems for full- and part-time faculty.
Committee for Excellence in Learning/Teaching (CELT)
? Support the faculty’s instructional innovation efforts in concert with ARI.

Institutional Research
Facilitate the increased use of evidence in strategic decision making.
? Create a request and tracking system for ad hoc OIR reports.

Libraries
? The Hultquist Library will explore options for indexing the college’s print archive, beginning with the
scrapbooks of local newspaper clippings. In addition, the libraries will investigate collaborating with JCC’s
Office of Institutional Research for potential connections with the archive and the college’s online
document repository.
? The libraries will revise website and LibGuide content.

? Examine cataloging and processing procedures to improve turnaround time for making materials shelf-
ready at the Cattaraugus Campus Library.
? The libraries will promote the increased usage of its electronic and physical resources.
? Provide training to deepen information literacy/critical thinking skills for library staff (carry over from 2014-
2015 goals).
? Hultquist Library will expand computer capacity in its classroom (HULT 103).
? The libraries will expand the number of student group study rooms and infuse them with updated and
customized facilities and technology.
? The libraries will expand technology choices available for users.
? Expand the Director of Libraries role within CELT beyond the planning and coordination of campus faculty
idea exchanges.
? Explore new technologies for delivering CELT faculty idea exchanges to enable increased participation.

Arts, Humanities, and Health Sciences

A.A. Humanities
English, Modern Languages, & Philosophy
? Expand the number of relevant language opportunities for our students.
? Research and develop strategies that will better support ELI students and improve the ability of academic
offerings that meet their specific needs.
? Develop a calendar of 2000-level offerings using various course delivery methods to better serve
Humanities majors and those in other disciplines with 2000-level humanities course requirements.
? Establish non-traditional 1-2 credit courses offered at various times to better serve special populations of
JCC students.

A.A. Global Studies
? Generate interest and attract more students in the GLS program thereby increasing enrollments – at least
5-10 students by spring 2016.
? Develop two new courses that will enhance the breadth and depth of the Global Studies program
offerings in the areas of Asian and African studies.

A.S. Communications
? Explore and pilot a new model for offering communication courses on the Cattaraugus County campus.
? Create an implement recruitment events during activity hour on the Cattaraugus County Campus to
generate interest in the Communication program.
? Continue to develop strong experiential learning opportunities for communication students.

Music Programs
A.S. Fine Arts: Music
Certificate – Digital Audio Production
? Finalize the articulation agreement with Mercyhurst University, as well as undertake, and establish if
possible, an articulation agreement with Buffalo State College.
? Complete a curriculum review of the required portions of both the A.S. Fine Arts: Music degree and
Certificate in Digital Audio Production with a view toward identifying areas where changes and
improvements should be made.
? Explore and begin to implement new marketing and recruitment strategies.

A.S. Fine Arts: Studio Art

? Develop an articulation agreement with a SUNY 4-year institution.
? Assess course and program structure to assure offerings are current and easily transferable.
? Develop a marketing and recruitment plan that leverages current students and alumni.

A.S. Media Arts
? Collaborate with staff to fund, purchase, and implement updates to hardware and software in Artworks
computer labs.
? Restructure curriculum in anticipation of program changes and position for future developments.
? Continue to seek multi-disciplinary uses for television studio and expand utilization of facility.
? Encourage and support JCC student participation in SUNY-wide film festival and promote annual student
media showcase.

A.S. Physical Education
? Revise the current Physical Education degree program to reflect national trends.
? Examine the feasibility and cost of converting the upstairs storage area in the PHED building and the
open mat area into smart classrooms.
? Develop a plan to integrate sub-maximal suspension training into the curriculum. Develop capital support
through collaboration between FS and the college.

A.A.S. Nursing
? Faculty will begin to teach the new 64 credit curriculum with the revised NUR 1510: Foundations of
Nursing course in the fall of 2015 and the revised NUR 1520: Health Restoration course in the spring of
2016.
? Faculty will refine the draft of the sophomore level new 64 credit curriculum by the spring of 2016 for
implementation in the fall of 2016.
? Faculty will draft their assigned standards and criteria for the ACEN self-study report by May, 2016.

A.A.S. Occupational Therapy Assistant
? Develop curriculum to support ACOTE standards related to documentation and reimbursement.
? Integrate Educational Council members into the curriculum to bring current practice issues and ethical
dilemmas that OT practitioners face into the classroom.
? Create innovative assignments with area facilities to graduate students who are responsive to area labor
needs.
? Develop a presentation and education two area facilities on the unique skill sets of the OTA to expand job
opportunities in emergent areas of practice in our geographic area.
? Identify opportunities and barriers to developing a clinical model to support student learning, and enhance
their ability to navigate a complex healthcare environment.

? Explore the feasibility of using different methods (online, hybrid, etc.) to deliver a portion of the
biotechnology curriculum.

? Complete the expansion of the MTI facilities on the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campus.
? Finalize the SUNY-required computer programming course for engineers.
? Establish an industrial advisory board in Cattaraugus County to shape the direction of new technical
course offerings. Once established, the board will have the opportunity to broaden the scope of
manufacturing needs across the JCC service area.
? Increase welding technology adjunct faculty resources.
? Finalize P-Tech grant welding class sequence.

A.S. Environmental Science
? Expand environmental research opportunities and/or additional internship opportunities for students with
local naturalists and professionals in the environmental sciences and related fields.
? Expand and implement new social media tools to better market and recruit new students to the
Environmental Science program and to enhance retention by strengthening the ES student culture of
sustainability.
? Explore avenues by which SURI Environmental I and II may be made more accessible and affordable for
students.
? Finalize draft and gain curricular approval for new Sustainability Certificate.

? Develop a biosafety plan and update the chemical hygiene plan where needed.
Mathematics
? Create or promote placement-testing resources to increase accuracy of students’ math placement.
? Formalize a way for online-only students to access imputed-level perquisite math courses not
currently offered online.
? Review how the curriculum of developmental math courses aligns with the prerequisite needs of
college-level math courses and take changes through the curriculum process as necessary.

A.A.S. Professional Piloting
? Phase out the program as listed in the program deactivation and discontinuance approved by SUNY and
the State Education Department.

Social Sciences and Business

? Research and examine alternatives for the business gatekeeper courses (BUS 1510 and BUS 1520) to
determine strategies to enhance student performance and retention.
? Explore options to hybridize upper level, low enrollment, accounting courses to enhance success.
? Analyze recommendations form the Entrepreneurship Certificate program review to determine feasibility
and implementation strategies.
? Follow through with the Marketing Initiative strategies for the Entrepreneurship Certificate program.

Criminal Justice Programs

? Support the training and use of the LEICA equipment in the classroom and for CJ partners
? Complete the renovation of the CSI House for suitability for Criminal Justice and LE Academy Classes.
? Pursue next steps in Corrections Academy to move toward pre-service program.
? Pursue next steps in determining the viability of a Paralegal/Legal Studies degree program.

? Provide access to and facilitate technological trainings for adjunct and full-time faculty to increase the use
of technology in the classroom, including the increase of hybrid and online courses.
? Populate and develop content for the Human Services website.
? Pursue the planning of a certificate program in Drug and Alcohol Counseling/Intervention. This will involve
curriculum development and will be a joint effort between Social Sciences and Human Services.

A.A. Social Sciences
? Update the child development lab in HULT building with state of the art materials. This lab is used by PSY
and EDU departments.
? Pursue the planning of a certificate program in Drug and Alcohol Counseling/Intervention. This will involve
curriculum development and will be a joint effort between Social Sciences and Human Services.
? Develop a framework for Undergraduate Research in Social Science.
? This History Department will invite and host a group of middle-school students from a predominantly
Hispanic neighborhood in Jamestown for a day at JCC, in collaboration with the Eastside Jamestown
YMCA. This day will enable up to 20 middle school students to attend JCC classes in the Social
Sciences, tour the College, and learn how JCC can be a part of their future.
? The History Department will collaborate with area museums, not-for-profit organizations, and historical
repositories to establish internship programs in Public (Applied) History for interest students.

Education Programs
A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences: Adolescence Education
A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences: Childhood Education
A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences: Early Childhood Education
A.A.S. Early Childhood
Certificate – Early Childhood Development
? Explore the development of an associate degree (AAS) for paraprofessional (i.e., teacher aides, teaching
assistants) aligned with appropriate recognized standards for paraprofessionals.
? Explore connecting the dedicated EDU spaces on the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses for
more seamless course delivery. Concurrently, explore identifying space on the Dunkirk campus to
incorporate into this for a three-way connection.
? Continue the strategic marketing activities started in the 2014.2015 year for the early childhood
program/degree.

A.A.S. and Certificate – Medical Office Technology & A.A.S. and Certificate –
Office Technology

? Collaborate with the Medical Office Technology and Office Technology advisory boards to develop and
implement plans for supporting skill development in each discipline. This will involve the development of
external partnerships to promote programs and enhance our ability to provide programs and services.
? Devise and implement a plan to change the name of the Medical Office Technology program to Health
Information Management. This may involve reworking the program core requirements.
? Devise and implement a plan to incorporate/embed professional certifications into the Medical Office
Technology program.
