It is ultimately in employers' best interests to have their employees' families functioning smoothly. In the long run, children who misbehave because they are inadequately supervised or marital partners who disapprove of their spouse's work situation are productivity problems. Just as work affects parents and children, parents and children affect the workplace by influencing the employed parents' morale, absenteeism, and productivity. Working under sub-optimal conditions; does it justify the employer employee relationship? Sub optimal conditions means attending office even in ill health. Attending office even when not well will deteriorate the productivity, and there is no other effect of it. Such events or just presenteeism is common among children, low waged workers, employees with poor health status. What can be the possible reasons for such presenteeism; could possibly be because they cannot afford to take one, no back up plans for the individual responsible, more work load when one returns to work, job insecurity, maybe there are downsizing syndrome in the office and in the same fear people attend office etc.

Factors leading to higher Presenteeism

Heavier workloads

Higher skill discretion

Harmonious relationships with colleagues

Role conflict

Precarious job status

Higher self-efficacy

Effectively measure the impact of absenteeism and presenteeism within an organization

Relate absenteeism and presenteeism to:

Lost work productivity

Increased overall costs

Develop solutions and programs to address concerns regarding absenteeism and presenteeism

After understanding the facts and reasons behind such endangering situation; employers should have liberal policy as far as the attendance is concerned. Because as extra strictness can withdraw interest of an individual from his/her work and hence eventually will find new employment; in this way you will tend to lose employees from org.; instead of retaining just because you have strict rules and regulations as far as presenteeism is concerned.

Small Things that can help you avoid such situations are as follows.

Make clear rules regards sick leave, and related concepts like whether the leave is paid or unpaid and such stuff.

When employees take a leave tell them they will be missed.

Let the person stay informed of the happenings in the office, and when he gets back to office do not forget to welcome them.

Hence with fear of few things if employees attend their office, one should rethink of the rules set and let a smooth atmosphere to pop in and stay long.
