Seeking perfection is a losing proposition. You can get very
close to it, but it makes more sense to aim for excellence.
Excelling at what you do is a matter of doing better than
before and of continuing to improve. If the trend is positive
and the results that you want are there, then excellence is
the way to go. But getting stuck on absolutely having to be
perfect no matter what is usually what stops people in their
tracks. Paradoxically, perfection is a performance killer. As
the saying goes, ‘nobody’s perfect’, and nobody has to be
perfect either. Just make up your mind to be excellent and
you’ll never look back.
People you care for
As you grow through personal
development, you’ll change for the
better. This change will afect people
around you, including people who are
important to you. Where they saw the old
‘you’ before, they’ll see a new ‘you’ now.

So you’re stuck? Here’s what to do
Identify the problem
Do you have the feeling that you’re
running on the spot? Harder and
harder, but not moving forward? If
you do, and especially if this feeling
has started to take up residence,
it’s probably because you have a
problem to deal with, but you don’t
know what it is. So your frst step is
to identify the problem. Do you feel uneasy in relationships
with other people? Do you want to do a good job, but you’re
uncertain about other people’s reactions? Is what you do
today diferent from what you really want to be doing?
Figuring out the problem is key, because that’s what lets you
start the process of self development towards the results
that you really want.
Re-think the thinking
As Einstein pointed out, the same thinking that created
the problem is unlikely to lead to the solution. How you’ve
thought up till now, the thought processes and methods that
you’ve used may simply not be adequate to allow you to go
further. New or additional tools and processes will open up
new possibilities for you, as long as they are accompanied
by the right guidance and expertise.

Here, now, with what you’ve got
If you’re not careful, you could spend the rest of your life
analyzing your situation and searching for the perfect
solution. But in that case, you’ll never progress and you’ll
never achieve any goals worth having.
There are instead two fundamental things that you need
to know. Firstly, most or even all of what you really need
to succeed is inside you already. You simply have to know
how to access those resources and how to put them to good
use. Secondly, any tools or methods that you use need to
be quick, easy to apply and useful, or you’ll be back in the
paralysis by analysis trap. That’s why the emphasis for real
success has to be to start here, now, and with what you’ve
already got.

Tools and methodologies – what do they really
need to be?
Simple
The tools and the methodology that you use need to be
simple. They have to be things that you can access easily and
put into action without complexity. Life is complex enough
as it is. It’s the results that count, and what you get from
using the tools, not the time that you spend using them.
Efective
These tools and methodologies also have to be efective.
They have to do the job. Wishy-washy approaches that
only get you half-way there are no good. If you want to go
from San Francisco to Tokyo, a plane ticket that only takes
you halfway there is no good, especially if it dumps you
in the middle of the Pacifc Ocean. To be efective, tools

with. By observing how someone reacts to diferent events
during the course of a negotiation and by using the tools

how willing they are to agree to what you are proposing, or
how you might change that proposal while still keeping the
outcome mutually satisfactory.

perfect no matter what is usually what stops people in their
tracks. Paradoxically, perfection is a performance killer. As

Simple
The tools and the methodology that you use need to be
simple. They have to be things that you can access easily and
put into action without complexity. Life is complex enough
as it is. It’s the results that count, and what you get from

These tools and methodologies also have to be efective.
They have to do the job. Wishy-washy approaches that
only get you half-way there are no good. If you want to go
from San Francisco to Tokyo, a plane ticket that only takes

you’ll communicate with people important to you and they’ll
notice those changes. Using hypnotic language patterns with
them can help them realize how good those changes are for

Modelling

Time Line Therapy Is an extension
of NLP. It’s a process for
identifying and removing limiting
decisions that you made at some
earlier time, and that are having a
negative efect on your life today.

business and your fnancial situation.
These pivotal decisions (like the classic “I’m not good
enough to do that”) are made by your subconscious. And
that’s a major part of the problem. Because you’re efectively

Time Line Therapy leverages hypnotic processes so that
you can connect back to the frst event that led you to make

can be useful if for example you stop trying to think up
reasons for putting of transformational life changes, or
if you stop the time-wasting activities of badly organized
communications. Then you can replace that brain ‘real
estate’ with other more positive, more efective activities

has certain flters in their brain. These flters change or
even eliminate information that is taken in from the outside

The flters that you have are specifc to you and have been
determined by your environment, your education and your
overall experience. Although you’ll always have some level
of fltering activity like this in your consciousness, you can
use the tools and methodologies to reduce their number

The more creativity you develop, the easier it gets. Getting
started is often the hardest part. Hence the usefulness of
good tools to get you of on the right tracks.

Another concept from NLP, calibration allows to you to
gauge thought processes in the person you’re negotiating
with. By observing how someone reacts to diferent events
during the course of a negotiation and by using the tools
from NLP, you’ll get a correspondingly better indication of
how willing they are to agree to what you are proposing, or
how you might change that proposal while still keeping the
outcome mutually satisfactory.
What’s involved for persuasion?
Rapport between two people
If there is no rapport between people,
then there is no persuasion – coercion
is the only option, and at best, it’s only
a short term solution. NLP has a range
of rock-solid techniques for building
rapport through mirroring and pacing,
to then lead others to your persuasive
