Zero marketing budget? No problem. Here’s why!

You often see companies that have just start up and have a solid product to boot that struggle with the right marketing strategy. The task of making the product reach their targeted customers is a big task. This is where many falter, even the big guys, sometimes.

Below are some pointers that will help you when you are stuck with not a single penny but have to do marketing.

1. Ask help: You might wonder what does this have to do with marketing? Asking help to people has everything to do with marketing! In fact, if you look around and ask for help, people are always ready to do so. The founder of an Indian Social Analytics company had his logo being mocked at on Twitter. He used this as an opportunity and asked the folks at Twitter for help. In the next 24 hours, he had 19 logo designs in his inbox. All for free! That is the power of asking. It is ok to admit that you made a mistake. People love self-effacing businessmen who admit to their folly.

2. Content is everything: Nothing creates more virality than having kick-ass content in your website’s blog. If you do not have a blog for your website, create one. Do not just harp on about the happenings in your company. Make it a point to write in general about problems related to your industry.

3. Build an email list: This is one of the most obvious ways, huh? Ask people to subscribe to your blog.

4. SEO: Both Onsite and Offsite SEO. Even hiring an SEO agency will not make a huge dent in your pocket. Select relevant keywords for your website and make sure you do a keyword analysis for your website using tools that are freely available.

5. Get published: Yes, get published in blogs that are related to your industry. It is free to get your company published in entrepreneurship blogs like Yourstory, Nextbigwhat, trak.in. These websites give you a better leverage in terms of getting funded and the much needed coverage.

6. Social Media: Get the help of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Reddit and other social networking websites which will give you the right kind of leverage if you target it correctly.

7.Answer on relevant forums: If you are the CEO, be visible on answer forums like Quora.

8. Ask your friends and family to sign up. They would not be your paying customers, but it is always good to show numbers and they will be more than glad to give you that little lift.

9. Copywriting: Make sure you write grab eyeballs with headlines that will make people click on the link. If Napolean Hill had named his epic “Think and Grow rich” as “Apply Quantum Physics in your life”, hardly three people would have bought the book, Napolean Hill himself, his wife and his mom. Be observant and respectful about the titles that you use for your blog articles, your meta description, in short, every single word in your website.

If there is anything that I have missed out on, please do post it in your comments section.
