Woman shocks city, walks semi-nude against dowry

Residents of Rajkot city in Gujarat shocked on Wednesday when a woman walked on a busy road semi-nude to protest against dowry harassment.

Pooja Chauhan, 22, alleges her husband and in-laws are harassing her for dowry and bearing a girl child. Soon after Pooja’s protest, police arrested her husband Pratap Singh Chauhan and his parents. Police plan to take action against Pooja for indecent behaviour.

Shocked residents saw Pooja in her undergarments and carrying a baseball bat and bangles in her hands, marching on the busy Race Course Road.

The Times of India reports Pooja married Chauhan three years ago and her in-laws kept demanding more dowry. The harassment increased when she gave birth to a daughter eight months ago.

She left home five months ago and started living on her own with her daughter, it said. The newspaper reports Pooja intended to march to the Police Commissioner’s office but went home after learning that the officer was out of town.

Pooja left her husband five months ago after he and his parents increased their harassment for not giving them a boy child. Pooja lives with her eight-month daughter, the paper said.

i partly agree with both of you...i read abt this article in todays times of india..it has come on the frontpage..
by this i want to say tht..if she wud hv gone to human rights n commisiion, action wud hv been taken after how many yrs who knws or whether it might be taken or not too..wen she took such a strong step ..the effect was immediate...as soon as she protested d commissioner put her husband and in laws behind the bars...well this is 1 aspect how u see it[coz she was harassed for dowry..n tht too spclly after givin birth to a girl child..which is ridiculous>>>>this could hv been very depressing]

but thr are many ppl suffering from such harassment...some alternate ways shd be found out rather than takin such stern action..[spclly knowin indian ppls mentality...such action wud be like a complete no-no...as we see..she might be charged for indecent behaviour....n y>>coz she was fighting against injustice done to her...]

SOMETIMES WHEN SOME THING HAPPENS TO SOMBODY LIKE IN THIS CASE , ONE FAILS TO THINK UNIVERSALLY GOOD THOUGHT, THAT PAIN AND ANGER DRIVES TO DO SUCH ACTS , AND IT IT DEPENDS ON PERSON'S SENSTIVITY AND LEVEL OF BEARING HARRASEMENT, WHO KNOWS BETTER THAN THAT WOMEN THAT WHT TYPE OF BUTURE BEHAVIOUR HER INLAWS AND HUSBAND WHOME SHE WAS MARRIED 4 YRS AGO AND THAT TOO A LOVE MARRIGE ....!! SO LEAVE METHODS TO HER THAT SHE CHOOSE , YA RAISING VOICE ON SUCH PEOPLE WHO THINKS BEING MAN THEY CAN DO ANY THING ON WOMEN , TILL SHE TAKES SUCH STERN STEPS , CAN BE A ISSUE.....

welll every1 thinks the women is wrong...but what she went for 3 yrs she only knows....after a certain point of time a person gets affected so much that nothing else matters ...not even what the world thinks...and you think if she ould have gone 2 the police ...there are so many dowry cases everyyear...and only few get reported rest all are kept under the wraps...maybe she though this would be a way...maybe wrong from others point of view...but i guess she didnt care about that...only what mattered to her what she went through with her kid

Choosing the right method is equally important dude. I know it must have been desperation that drove her to this, but think like this... that if everyone turns to streets, everyone starts taking law in their hands.... then what will happen.

I don't blame the lady for anything, but the thing is that these organisations, esp the woman's right commission help women a lot and the police from their fear take action more speedily.

Today women have started paraded naked on the streets, tomorrow there might be killing..... i don't think anyone can approve it. Yes, i do agree that a very strong public example should be made of such people, but the way to do it should be well thought of.

We may not have any right to tell her what method she should choose, yet, we are here to discuss these things.

New Twist in the Case

Sex twist to dowry case, NCW probes bare truth

On July 6, a young woman in Rajkot protested dowry harassment by walking semi-nude on the city streets.

Twenty-two-year-old Pooja Chauhan hit headlines after she took to the shocking form of protest alleging torture by her in-laws and husband, embarrassing the police into filing a dowry harassment case under the Domestic Violence Act.

But now there’s a fresh twist to the case.

The National Commission for Women says it wasn’t dowry harassment, but sexual exploitation that forced Pooja into walking the streets in her undergarments.

"She was misused by various people. There must've been a trafficking chain. These are people exploiting young girls in their vulnerable situation. We have one or two names given to us by Pooja. We've given it to the police commissioner,” says NCW member, Malini Bhattacharya.

NCW found Pooja was a victim of child trafficking and despite her love marriage with her husband Pratap, she was again pressured into taking to flesh trade.

“I was sick of my mother-in-law and husband. I am so sick, I don't care even if I die now,” says Pooja.

Meanwhile, the city police is probing the domestic violence case registered against Pooja's in-laws.

Rajkot police commissioner Nityanandan told CNN-IBN that though police have no information about trafficking and prostitution angle, they will wait for the NCW report to decide on further course of action.

Law catches up with in-laws

Pooja’s husband Pratap, mother-in-law Hansa and two neighbours were arrested on harassment charges immediately after the news report and are currently out on bail.

They were summoned by a Rajkot court on July 8 and were asked to respond to Pooja's plea for the demand of alimony and social, mental and physical protection.

Pooja - who went underground after making news - is currently staying with her parents in Rajkot.

The court also ordered police to provide protection to Pooja and also said she should be allowed to continue staying in her rented accommodation.

The court's order directed her landlord in Shastrinagar, where Pooja stayed for the past year with her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, not to ask her to vacate the house.

Meanwhile, NCW says its top priority is to rehabilitate Pooja and her daughter.
