The competitive edge of Tata Nano over its competitors is:

- Low Cost, Employed Light weight steel for its body and aluminum engine cover, Single Windshield Wiper, No hatchback, Engine at rear, Digital Fuel Indicator and Tubeless Tyres

- More spacious among the low cost small cars i.e. Maruti Suzuki 800, one of its main competitor, 20% less space compared to Tata’s Nano

- Less pollution.

- The Indicating instruments like Fuel gauge, speedometer are mounted in the centre and not on the dashboard, reduces costs in shifting the steering wheel from left to right or vice versa

- Almost 97% locally sourced, whereas its competitors depends more on imported components.

- Worked in collaboration with suppliers. Collective thinking and out-of-box approach.

- Cheap labor costs and flexibility, high level of available management and engineering skills have maintained the competitiveness against the global players.

Pressures:
- First mover advantages for two years may prove to be successful, but rising commodity prices could be disruptive to its growth. Ex; Rubber and steel could play havoc with the car’s pricing.
- Due to high demand and less availability of oil resources will increase the fuel cost which may lead the consumer to switch to Bio-fuels or electric cars.
- New entrant’s entry Automakers like Hyundai, Bajaj are also planning small car offerings.
- China will be a major challenge to Nano by manufacturing cars even lesser or equal to Nano’s price. Unlike India, which has struggled with the rising Indian Rupee against the dollar in the past two years, china’s artificially suppressed currency will make export markets easier to tap.
- Maintenance costs are still unknown, For Maruti Suzuki 800; maintenance costs are 400-500 per month which are affordable. To sustain the competition, costs must be less for Nano
- Government regulation on excise duties may prove costlier. For eg: In the Mid 1990’s pune-based automaker, Kinetic developed 700 CC low cost car, but the plan was dropped because government revised excise regulation for all automobiles above 650 must pay same excise, which incurs huge costs.
- Low resale value. Maruti 800 has got a good resale value because of its massive success.
- Crash safety, Yet Nano has passed the safety standards. We are unsure about its safety.

I don’t see any immediate negative impact after the launch. Tata currently have manufacturing capacity of 25K cars per year which is much much less then the predicted demand. Initial booking will be more or less distributed across urban as well as sub urban regions. But eventually as the production capacity grows, what problems have been mentioned in the original post are bound to occur.
Apart from replacing the “autos” by Nano, India can also look towards carbon credits for drivers. This will help to control the situation up to certain extent unless the infrastructure is further developed.
Some control measures need to be taken immediately as other players are also planning to launch the low cost car. Maruti may also redesign 800 and bring it in the same segment.
Small cars is the future of India. Tatas, would be competitors and government needs to do proper planning before its too late.

Tata Motors has received over 2.03 lakh bookings for the Nano, garnering nearly Rs 2,500 crore. The company sold a total of 6.10 lakh forms which means that the conversion rate was a little under one-third.

Total bookings would be around 2 lakh in its edition dated April 25. Although initial industry expectations were that bookings could be as much as 5 lakh, senior company officials maintain that the company has received a good response at a time when the car market is struggling for volumes.

Demand in the major metros has been tilted towards the mid and the top end variants of the Nano while the tier 2 and tier 3 markets have witnessed higher demand for the base and the mid Nano variants. Metro markets have also seen more cash payments for the car as opposed to the financing option.

Therfore I think Tata’s Nano will be successful

there are some pros and cons for TATA's nano..

some PROS are:-
1) It is the cheapest car available in the market.
2) It is fuel efficienf and creates less pollution.
3) it is a compact car, yet 5 people can be easily accomodated.
4) It is a TATA product which has huge GOODWILL in the market.
5) due to growing temperature, people will prefer a car with an AC, and NANO is pretty cheap.

some CONS:-
1) another car is getting launched soon, it'a an internation brand which will cost 1.3lacs ON ROAD. and is far -far better than NANO is style, design and engine.
2) If people start using it as a TAXI/CAB, then normal people wont feel pride in buying it, as it would be ananomous to a TAXI.
3) parking space shortage would be a big concern, and also that today in most of the parking sights.
TWO WHEELER - Rs. 5
FOUR WHEELER - Rs 20
so a common man will preffer buying a two wheeler for the ease of parking and less parking expense.
4) Due to growing populatipon, the roads are so very jammed and driving a car in metropolitans is not an easy task anymore, so people prefer taking a two wheeler.

TATA have got Rs.2500cr till date as booking fee.It will be a huge success for TATA and would be one of the best innovation in 2009.

the marketing team of nano were expecting 1 million of booking for nano, but it is failed by a mile, the total registarion is only 2.03 lakhs. i think the people are following the policy of wait and watch and want to know abt the performance of the nano.

Well if u read the recent news TATA has failed to meet their expected target of 5lakh bookings.TATA managed to clinch upto 2 lakh bookings.I feel it will take some time for the customers to actually digest this nano concept.
