Will Mumbai get BEST power deal?

Mumbaikars are in for a tough time in the coming months.

The deadline for power companies in Mumbai to procure more power in order to prevent load shedding ends on Monday and to add to the misery, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking (BEST) has hiked rates for its consumers in south Mumbai.

Such is the state of Mumbai’s ‘powerlessness’ that using simple necessities like television and fan will pinch them hard.

Many like the 59-year-old Kishore Kuvavala – a retired bank employee – are the hardest hit as his house falls under the LT1 residential category which has seen a 15 to 28 per cent hike in power tariff.

“These (fan and TV) are not luxuries. Times have changed. Gone are the days when there were only two lines, one fan and one light. If we have to compete with the world, there has to be some bare minimum infrastructure in place,” he rues.

Monday could bring more bad news for consumers like Kuvavala with power companies expected to announce whether or not they have been able to buy power from neighbouring states to make up for the 200 MW shortfall the city currently faces.

But consumers say that Mumbai should get special treatment considering the heavy economic activity that takes place in the city.

“Mumbai should not suffer from load shedding. We earn the maximum revenue for the city and no city like Mumbai should face load shedding,” says a Mumbaikar Girish Upadhayay.

The message to Mumbaikars is quite clear - you may have been spared of frequent load shedding as compared to other cities in Maharashtra till now, but you would have to definitely pay a higher cost in the coming years.
