Carlos Slim Helu - The richest man on the world
7/04/2007
Bill Gates now is not the richest man of the world. The richest man on the world is Carlos Slim Helu says The Guardian..
Latin America's richest man - Carlos Slim Helu added more than $6 billion to his fortune this year. He sold off his stakes in MCI and Altria and used the proceeds to up his holding in Saks Inc; in his fixed line operator, Telmex; and in America Movil, his flagship wireless telecom outfit.
The latest was a particularly smart move as America Movil's stock has almost doubled in the past year. Carlos Slim Helu also owns 71% of a new public company, Impulsora del Desarollo Economico de America Latina, which he spun off from financial services giant Grupo Financiero Inbursa. Inbursa also invested in a start-up budget airline called Volaris. An art collector, Slim houses his Rodin sculptures in Mexico City's Museo Soumaya, the museum he funded and named after his late wife. His Grupo Carso is reportedly a combination of his first name and his late wife's.
By Forbes

Carlos Slim Helu is now the world's richest man is worth an estimated $US67.8 billion. This Mexican tycoon has overtaken Warren Buffet and Bill Gates according to a respected tracker of Mexican financial wealth: Eduardo Garcia from Sentido Comun an online financial publication he founded. A 27 per cent surge in the share price of America Movil, Latin America's largest cell phone operator controlled by Carlos Slim, from March to June made him close to $8.6 billion wealthier than Bill Gates (which Garcia figures Gates is worth $59.2 billion). Meanwhile, Forbes magazine has reported in April that Slim had overtaken Warren Buffet but not Gates. Forbes had increased Carlos Slim's net worth because gains from his holding company Carso and fixed-line telecom Telmex added to the Mexican's fortune while shares of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc fell in the same period. Garcia calculated three months ago that Carlos' value was just more than gates by a tiny bit but now he has no doubt who is richer. Carlos Slim's companies rose sharply with shares of Telmex in the second quarter rising 11 percent and Slim's bank, Inbursa, saw its stock increase by 20 percent. Garcia figures that Slim and his family own a fortune equivalent to 8 per cent of Mexico's gross domestic product. According to Sentido Comun, for Gates to be worth 8 percent of the U.S. economy, his fortune would have to grow to more than $13 trillion, 17 times his current wealth.

4 out of the 10 richest men in the world are INDIANS!!!! Thats a record number for any country, even USA!! Out of the 4, 3 seem to be there to stay for a long time (Mittal and the Ambanis). This is a sign of progress being made in India and the bright future. Sure, there maybe somethings wrong in our nation, but that is expected given that we've been ruled by some other nation for the past 300-400 years. I hope this goes to show that Indians are one of the brilliant races/groups of people. Most of our problems are only caused by extreme poverty; the nation will improve slowly but surely.

Because 3 of these 4 Indians still live in India (except Mittal), much of this wealth will trickle down to the masses. In a fascist regime, that might not happen. But being that India is democratic, poorer Indians are sure to see some of this wealth soon. For example, The Ambanis will go buying cars, giving the car producers/salesmen more income. They will want drivers to drive them giving drivers more income. These drivers and workers will in turn want to get more things for their families, giving the shopkeepers and owners more income. Soon, the plight of poor Indians will improve; having 4 Indians become the richest men in less than 30-40 years is a amazing sign of it. I hope everyone is as excited and motivated by it as I am. Hopefully one day, you'll be reading my name on that l

An overwhelming 836 million people in India live on a per capita consumption of less than Rs 20 a day, according to the findings of the Arjun Sengupta report on the Conditions of Work and Promotion of Livelihood in the Unorganised Sector. The report is based on government data for the period between 1993-94 and 2004-05.

So, who are the ones who have actually benefitted from the boom in the economic growth of the country?

The middle class and the rich grew from 162 million to 253 million while the neo rich of 91 million.

The middle class grew from 15.5 per cent to 19.3 per cent but the extreme poor have also benefited (274 to 237 million) – 43 million of them to be precise. Their per capita consumption has gone up from Rs 9 to Rs 12.

“The rich tend to hide their consumption. So if you account for that, they are actually richer than the report reflects. This again reflects the fact that the gap between the rich and poor is even wider,” Sengupta explained.

One is classified as absolutely poor if the per capita consumption is less than Rs 9 a day. However, if the per capita consumption is Rs 13 a day, then the individual is above the poverty line. So, the definitions of poverty are sometimes difficult to understand.

The justification for economic reforms was supposed to be the trickle down effect but for those who live in trying conditions 10 years of economic reforms seems to have made little difference. Is it any wonder that those leaders who are seen to be reformers can never win the popular vote?

I agree. It needs to start with a higher minimum wage. Maybe then these people would be forced to pay a lot more. Is there even minimum wage in India?
