Depends on what you mean by "socialist" and "non-socialist" policies. Socialism can extend beyond party, and even beyond the state. Also, you should elaborate on your "inherently unequal" comment.

Wikipedia actually defines socialism pretty well:
"Socialism is an economic system in which the means of production are publicly or commonly owned and controlled co-operatively, or a political philosophy advocating such a system. As a form of social organization, socialism is based on co-operative social relations and self-management; relatively equal power-relations and the reduction or elimination of hierarchy in the management of economic and political affairs."

I found that Socialism worked by living in America and France.First hand experience is always best.As for work ethic If you look it up they have a 2 hour lunch and work 10hrs a day.
(but live very close to work 5 min. ave.) Look it up
they have a higher productivity rate than American workers.
They are 3rd we are 4rth. in the world. This means they work harder/more efficient than us.The other two countries 1rst and 2nd place are in Europe also and are socialist (Norway/Belgium i think) proving the socialism makes you lazy myth is not true.If it was how could the European economy pass ours two yrs. ago as the worlds largest ?
thank you for posting this question discussion and knowledge
are the key to a better future,I hope we can discuss some of my other posts

history shows us that earlier there was a big conflict between two ideologies in the world, between liberalists and communists, also a disparity and a huge gap b/w rich and poor. Post industrialisation, we saw uprising of a new segment of society, the middle class, they were the ones who demanded for security of their basic needs like food, water, shelter, clothing etc. And this was exactly when socialism came into being!!
