The survey called “Nielsen Global Online Shopping Report” has published some interesting data about the way Indian consumers shop online. According to the study nearly half the Indian consumers (50%) use social media sites to help them make online purchase decisions. While 71 percent of consumers take the help of family members to make the purchase decision, 64 percent of them rely on the recommendations from friends. Only 29 percent consumers like to have firsthand experience based on online product reviews. Regarding the nature of products purchased, the report says that online reviews and opinions are most important for buying Consumer Electronics (57%), Software (50%), and a Car (47%). The report also says that 85 percent of Indian consumers intend to make online purchases over the next six months. They are most likely to buy books (41 per cent), airline tickets/reservations (40 per cent) and electronic equipments (36 per cent) online. Other products and services that Indians are inclined to buy online in the next six months include tours/hotel reservations (29 per cent), event tickets (26 per cent), clothing/accessories/shoes (25 per cent), computer hardware (24 per cent), videos/DVDs/games (22 per cent), music (not downloaded) and computer software (not downloaded) (21 per cent).[/i][/i]

Are social media customers more or less likely to buy additional services? How much revenue was generated from cross-sells directly from social media compared to non-social media customers? Everybody has now recognized this new and influential medium to interact with the people and make them take part in the 2-way communication. Today, generally most of the politicians have their own website which wasn’t the case few years back. Some of them are using social mediums very well to relate with people. Once you are comfortable with the knowledge that your brand cannot be built overnight, start with the obvious - advertising. However, mainstream advertising, one must realize, is not for everyone. Sponsoring a local beauty pageant will probably give your brand more of a boost than an expensive radio spot would ever give you. It has cheapened not only because the media in which advertisements are placed has increased in volume but also because there are now more options available for the marketer to pick from. Companies now have social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter at their disposal. The best ways of building a relationship, send them a 'nice to meet you' email and perhaps news clipping every now about something they are interested in. It needs to be something of value 'to them'. It's about being selective with who you spend the majority of time with by asking questions to get to know them better. If they aren't a match - move on. New media have challenged by altering the participation habits of the public. The internet creates a space for more diverse political opinions, social and cultural viewpoints and a heightened level of consumer participation. There have been suggestions that allowing consumers to produce information through the internet will lead to an overload of information.
Facebook – leading social media platform
There was a time when people were saying that placing matters on Facebook wasn’t optimistic. But now the picture is completely different.
Twitter – micro blogging platform
The success of this micro logging site came through 3rd party apps. Now, people have their own news stream and they also create messages through hash tags (#). It’s very important because it links the content by other tags which have interrelated content. It’s unique for Twitter. Hash tags are an excellent technique to observe exclusive discussions, along with dissimilar views.
YouTube – video sharing
YouTube and other video sharing sites provide the videos of politicians who answer the questions publicly as a reference. So if anyone says something, it stays on internet forever.
Barak Obama – FaceBook
After successfully making use of different social media tools, US President Barak Obama continues to update his Facebook account at least a week with notes and videos regarding what he or his administration is going to do.
